Clay City July 6th.

Pulled into the park, and discovered they had gotten 4 inches of rain the night before, so the pit area was soft. We had to go through some 12 inch ruts about 20ft long just to get into the pits! Then, when I went to turn around, I found a nice little area that had standing water that I didn't see at first due to tall grass. (Snotty clay and Michelen street radials don't mix!) Got the hauler stuck, so I backed the Ford off and was then able to get the hauler out of the spot with a little rocking and a lot of throttle. Needless to say, I provided the pre show entertainment in the pits LOL. After getting through that, I walked the track and found that it was going to be a power track pure and simple, so I knew I was screwed! I had aired the tires down to 30 rear and 18 front and with the current final drive ratio in Horsin' Around and the new tires, I figured I'd have trouble making rpm.
The hook.. Tightened up the chain, and rolled out a couple feet and put the go fast peddle on the floor. Problem, the tires were hooked up so well, that it took too long to get rpm, then was only able to hit 6300. I knew at 50 feet, Horsin' Around wasn't going to place very well. At the other end, the #$@% sled stopped me at 279.49ft. Oh well, chalk this one up to another lesson, and make notes in the log book - Clay City, LOTS of bite!

Good news was that it didn't bounce and she went back on the trailer under her own power. Bad news is that I'm starting to think I should have made the final around 27:1 instead of 25.9:1

Oh well, I'll run her as she is this season, then put a clutch in it this winter and put her on another diet.

At least we're having some fun and that's what counts! When I get obsessed with winning, it's time to quit!

Tires

Do you guy's think it would help if I shaved the tires a little the "old fashioned" way? (ie burn'em off)

NO I'd drop to a lower gear set. If you running 4.11 go to 4.56's if you have 4.56's then 4.88's.. We have guys running 5.18's in there trucks doing really good.

re Gears

July 10 2007, 6:20 AM

That's the problem. I'm running 5.38's now in my 10.25 and dana 60. I can't get lower gears. Since the 205 tcase has a 1.96 low range, it kind've limits what I can do with the gears. I'm toying with putting my bw1356 back in and then 4.10 gears, that would give me a 27.4 final.

The way I see it.

Alan we can't have the best setup for every track. If we could run transfer cases like Dan's then that would be another story.I know you guys have been getting lots of rain . But what if the track had been dry and maybe even a little dusty ? You would have been right there with your gear ratio. We kinda are stuck. We pick the best setup we can and it has to do it on all track types. I definitley would leave the gear ratio where it is at for the time being. Do you happen to have another set of tires to carry with you ? If I remember you bought 33's. I can't remember what tread. BFGs all terrains ? It is some more work but maybe a tiny option. To change them at the track.
As far as cutting the tires the old fashion way. I probably wouldn't if they are radials. I feel the tread gets a little harder as they wear down. Now a bias tire I have seen guys do really well with boggers and ground hawgs that were worned. Seemed like they weren't as aggressive and just really let the truck work good.
Glad to hear you are having fun and the truck is staying together always a big plus.

alan look at the cepecks they tread is only about 1/4 inch and they are big so they stay on top but yet dig we can only run ag bar tires in our mod 4x4 class granted we can cut them but we found out if you just gind the bar down some and sharpen the edge they work great but then again they work on some tracks alot better then others

re Cepeks

July 11 2007, 7:52 AM

We're not allowed to run Cepeks in the Super stock class, only in Pro Stock. I'm currently playing with air pressure. Friday I had 18 in the front and 30 in the back, and I'm thinking that combination gave me way too much bite for the final gearing I've got.

I'm going to run it like it is for this season just so's I can get to as many tracks as possible, then decide on going to a clutch or just changing the gearing. I've got a 465 Muncie sitting in the barn that needs the pro fab kit in it.

It's kind've one of those deals where I'm REALLY wanting to build a shop, but would like to be more competitive as well.

Anyone know where a money tree is? LOL

i would have to say you need to play with air preshure
you seem kinda low for a clay track since i never know what to expect from one track to the next i put 50 psi in the rear and 25 in the front befor i get to the track than i check the track out and adjust from there it is easier to let air out than put it back in but 279 pull isnt to bad i am willing to bet that you would be alot happier with a manual unless your running 1000 hp those autos tack alot of power
but glad your haveing fun that is what it is all about
good luck
