Ok, since I started thinking about going to a clutch, a question has come to mind since I am also going to hydro steering. Most guys have gone to hydraulic steering and many just have a shaft going from the orbital valve to a steering wheel, so where / how is the clutch pedal mounted?

Also, if I do away with the alternator, how many batteries to I really need to run the steering pump, fan, water pump, starter and ignition?

i run 2 deep cycle batterys and trickle charge them after every pull for about 3 days
i have electric hyd steering, elec water pump, elec fuel pump
elec fan, and run a power coil with a msd 7 box and so far so good since they are heavy i have them mounted on my weight bar

i still have my factory clutch and break pedeals all i did was chop down the steering colum and shaft and mounted the orbatel on the fire wall i used the factory steering knuckle so the wheel wasnt in my lap it was easy but you can mount it any were i have seen them mounted were the factory steering gear box was that would be the easiest in my opion

if someone wants to give me exact details on how to post a pic i would post some for ya i have a digatil camra and a cord thingy to plug into the pc and that is all i know

Jesse,

If you would like, email the pictures to me and I'll post them for you. my email is loganwildman1 at verizon.net

The best way to post pictures is to login into this site, then you'll see the option when doing a new post to use photobucket. Create an account with photobucket, then the pics won't expire as long as you don't delete them from photobucket.

I wouldnt get rid of the alternator if i were you. just wire in a delco remy and wire the field up to a push button to energize it. that way it only charges when you want it too.

Alan,

We are not exactly the same but we don't run an alternator either. We do run 2 fans, water pump, and MSD. We have 2 big John Deere batteries. Next year we will probably add another one too. Not sure how much the steering would use but I would think you would want at least 2 or 3 batteries.

Hydro pump

July 12 2007, 12:48 PM

I'm assuming the pump is on while going down the track?? but do you guy's have it wired to a momentary switch so that it's only on when needed? Maybe I should ask what is the recommended way to wire it up?

I starting to think I will end up gutting out the OEM wiring, and doing a new wiring harness for just the necessities. I guess it's time to turn it into a full blown race truck. LOL!

Good thinking Alan! The pumps have a soleniod on them (just like a ford starter solenoid) and you just wire a toggle switch to the small terminal and turn it on and off when you need it. As for the orbital valve you can put it just on the outside of the firewall and leave the whole column in or put it inside an make a shaft to mount the wheel on. Remember to gusset your steering shaft or you will have a bad day also. Set it up for 3 batteries so you can put your ignition on a seperate battery. Put everything else on the other 2 batteries. I can snap a pic of how my steering is if you would like.

Steering

July 13 2007, 7:31 AM

Travis,

Pictures are always good! If you could snap a picture or 2 that would be great. Missed you at Kokomo, are you going to Rockville? The Ford did a little better, I put 50 psi in the back and 28 in the fronts, and was able to get more RPM, but still not what I'm wanting to see. It's getting a little frustrating coming next to last every time! Sux getting things figured out! It is very obvious that I missed the gearing as I'm not getting out of the hole and building revs as quickly as I'd like. If the budget allows it, in August when the schedule slows down some, I'm going to change back to my other Tcase and put 4:10's in. That will get my final up to 27.4. That way I'll have 3 pulls in September to test it out with. Then maybe pickup some 35's over the winter.

I was talking to Adam last night and he was saying that he'd heard it's better to run an alternator as the MSD will have more current/voltage and therefore make more power. Any thoughts on this?

BTW, I took the radio out over the weekend so you can't laugh at me about that now! LOL!

Batteries

July 13 2007, 7:41 AM

Travis, With multiple batteries, would you parallel the 2 for the pump and accesseries, and have the one for the ignition isolated from the others?

What gear.

July 13 2007, 8:58 AM

Alan I know you said you had 5.38 in the truck now and I figure that probably is as low as you can get for those rearends. What is the gear in the t-case now and what is the t-case. I assume you are talking about putting a New Process back in ???

Re: Clutch

another option for batteries is to run a single 12volt for your fans and accessories. then hook a 12volt and 6volt together in series to make it 18 volts and run your ignition and starter on that. one of the local hipo guys has been doing this for years with 302 junkyard starters in a 540 at 14:1 Ex-514 headed monster with locked timing with no problems. its a low buc truck that usually puts atleast a truck length on everyone else.

Tcase

July 13 2007, 10:34 AM

Draggin,

Right now I'm running a np205 which has a 1.96:1 low range and 5.38's in the pumpkins, which is as low as I can get. The tranny has a 2.46 so my final is 25.94. If I put my bw 1356 back in and change to 4.10's then my final is 27.4. That should give me a little more torque at the begining to get the rpm up quicker.

I understand

July 13 2007, 11:26 AM

Totally what you are trying to do. Maybe the auto- tranny makes your truck act alot different. But that final should be great. Mine right now is a 27.195 and with the 35" tire it brings it down some. I was looking at putting in a Borg Warner tranny to get the final to 25.003. But I feel I would need to drop back to a 33" tire and really don't have the money now to buy new tires. Have you thought about moving the cam timing to help the bottom end a little. Assuming you have the cam set straight up you may be able to advance it 4 degrees and help bottom end power some.
You are running 33" tires ????

Alan: After seeing your videos I am surprised that with the the HP you have you're not able to keep the RPM's up at the end of your pull. Especially with that low of a rear end. I would think if you went to 410's you would make it worse. Are you pullihg with the low side of your transfer case?

The video you watched was on a true power track, it was pulling the fire out of the 1000+ hp 2 mods. So that video is not a good example. Alan just leave it alone for right now have some fun, buy some profab stuff and cepeks, cut all the weight out of the truck and give that truck a little chemical dependancy and lets give the rest of the pros hell next year.
I guess what I am saying is make the jump it will cost you less than to be competitive in that class. It is hard to believe but is true.

Travis I hear you, and your right on the money with the reverser and drop box, but I'm still afraid that I'd have to go through the motor again to be competitive on top of the drivetrain, and that simply isn't in the budget. I've gotta get a shop built first then take it further! Now if I can just find a used 465 with the profab kit in it.

Re: Clutch

Watch all the sites that have classifieds for pulling and be patient and one will pop up. Decks sold the one out of the Flick truck for like $900 and that was the whole kit and he also sold one with just the 3rd gear kit for like $400. As for more hp I may have something right up your alley about mid season next year. Does your tranny have a manual valve body?? Do the math on with the borg box and 2nd gear.

Travis,

Yes I'm running a manual valve body and have also had the the tranny gone through to increase line pressures etc. I'm going to leave it as is for now and have some fun. Larry Helms gave me a couple of tips last week at Kokomo that I'm going to try at Rockville (hopefully as it's pouring rain here and there calling for rain all day) If not then I'll try it at Paoli.
Give me a call or let me know what you'll have available next season so I can start saving my pennies LOL.

What other sites have classifieds for pulling? The only ones I'm aware of are racingjunk.com, midnight mistress and truckpulls.com
