Diesel vs gasser

In my gasser days we ran anywhere from 650-850 or so hp and 600 - 750 ftlbs torque dependin on the motor ci 460-545.

My diesel makes about 380 -400 hp maybe and around 650-700 ft lbs in its current form at a wastegated 45 psi boost

We could never run a gasser in second gear even with 4:11's or 4:46's on a 33" tire

How is it that I can run second gear on 3:50's with my diesel, and I am competitive?

Thoughts?

C6

I am assuming that you are running the same ratio tranny now that you did back in the gasser days. I think I remember you then to ran a C6.
My guess would be if the trannys are geared the same that the diesel makes so much more power down low in the rpm range.

same only different

I am runnin the C6 yes, and regular transfer case etc.

So with the gasser, (6800rpm x 32" tire) divided by (20.1 gear x 336) = 32 mph wheelspeed

With the diesel , (3350 rpm x 32" tire) divided by (10.11 gear x 336) = 31.5 mph

With the diesel I am makin half the hp, but the same or close to the same torque as the gasser.

So how come a gasser cant carry second gear? It shouldnt matter where the torque is made cuz the gearing takes advantage according to the rpm used??

OOOOOO.......

July 30 2007, 8:20 PM

I use the name DieselEater for a lot of reasons.......The most important reason is that one day I hooked up to a guy with a 98 or 99 powerstroke. After a bunch of smack talking it was decided that we would have our truck weighed in at the local feed store so we could even up. At the time I was in an 85 3/4 ton with a hot little 350. I reved it to about 3500 RPM and rode the clutch pedal so I wouldn't spin out right away. By the time his turbo decided to help him, he had been drug back enough for me to embarase him in front of alot of people!!!

The last time I looked up this debate...Nobody could agree on rules to compare the two types of engines to make people happy.

- Diesels NEED a turbo to do anything! (put a turbo on a Big Block Gasser!!)
- Diesels weigh an average of 2000 pounds more. (i.e....weight classes)
- Diesels cost 30% more at the dealer. (Could use that extra $$ for a Wicked BBC)
- Diesels never get the fuel economy that the commercials claim. (guys I talk to say 12ish)
- Diesel fuel is more expensive (here anyway). (by at least $0.25)

I'll probably NEVER own one due to simple economics. However, On a commercial basis like over the road trucking, it is obviously the only option.

There's my humble opinion for you

A......

Still

In my mind I still feel the diesel is making more power right above idle then the gasser is further up in it's rpms.
I guess we need to see dyno sheets on the two motors and then some how work the gear ratios in that equation. I don't know how but I bet there is a way the amount of torque applied to the wheels could be figured. To bad you don't have a chasis dyno.

Diesel What lololol ;o)

July 31 2007, 1:24 PM

My dry weight with me in the truck is 5600 lbs.

From a dead stop, no boost I can lay down about 250' of rubber in first gear, then at boost in second and then again in third gear

I doubt u be backin up to this here Ford n draggin it anywhere lmao

However i do agree with most of your statements lol

I am guessing that the diesel is a newer truck, and would have a newer t-case with a 2.7ish reduction and your gasser had a 205 with a 1.96 reduction and that would make a difference. Did you let the gasser shift?? The diesels around here with autos shift and that would make a difference.

91 Ford 1.96 low as far as I know? or am I wrong
its a Borg Warner aluminum tcase
No the old gassers didnt shift - like u guys not enough power to carry it.
Yes I shift my diesel - thats how i get down to 10:1 gearing in second gear.

What model borg is that t-case?? The 1345 or 1356 have a 2.7 reduction.

Assumptions

lol, make an ass of....

I didnt know the gear ratio had changed.

That makes my second gear ratio 13.81 which makes a lot more sense.

Its still "fun" no matter how I get there

Doesn't make you an ass. But know you can plan further upgrades and experiments better. You will be suprised how strong that t-case is.
