Ford F250 4x4 advice needed and I cant think of a better place to ask.

Looking at swapping in a running 460 from a 79 f250 2wd Auto into a 79 F250 4x4 w/4 speed. 4x4 currently has a 351 or 400 in it. Im assuming atleast a new flywheel to work with the 460. What else is going to be needed to make the swap happen?

Yes your going to need a Fly wheel for a 460..And then you'll have to make some motor mounts for the 460 .. other then that it should be a easy bolt in ..

Rear sump oil pan and pickup tube. L&L makes real nice motor mounts. Sometimes the alt. and power steering pump are mounted low on a 2WD and won't work on a 4WD because of the cross member.

Motor mounts are different. If I remember right you might have to use a 390 flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. Because the 460 pressure plate won't fit in the older bellhousings. Is this going to be strictly a pulling truck? Because if you live in an area where they do pollution testing, it's going to be impossible to get it to pass. Fender well headers are about the only way to go unless you remove the x-member behind the motor and thats not a problem.

Swap

September 4 2007, 9:49 PM

thanks Digger

This is really meant to go from my 79 F250 2wd ranch truck that started having auto tranny issues to a 4wd manual setup and a good running 460 from the 2wd.

Ok..the farther I dig into this the less appealing it is. I can deal with the flywheel and motor mount but now its sounding like the power steering, alternator mounts, oil pan, pump and possible exhaust manifolds wont swap over either due to the difference in the 2wd frame to 4wd frame. I hate to say it but Chevy guys have it easy compared to this...

Is the clutch/pressure plate specific to the 460 and the 351/400 clutch and pressure/plate wont swap over ??

this is in fact an easy swap and is done a lot.
Yes the 250 mounts will work - straight bolt in.
The power steering mounts and accessories off the f250 will wire in and bolt in right from the f250 to the 4x4

If your going pulling do not screwaround with flywheels and pressure plates - buy the right one.

Yes a 390 flywheel and the 351/400 pressure plate will work if you have the right years, and its been awhile so i cant tell u exactly.

Unless you have lowered your truck in the front the front sump oil pan will work, but clearance to the pumpkin is tight.

Have i missed anything you asked?

forgot one

you may need to double up o nthe flexplate shields to get enough clearance from the pressure plate to the bellhousing.
If memory serves we just cut up the second one (removed from about 3 oclock to abuot 7 oclock just under the starter hole)so it would slide in from the top.

When I done mine, I just put 2 washers in between the bellhousing and the tranny to get the extra space. But I also took a grinder to the pilot bushing to make it even with the rear of the crank. My truck is a 77 and I just had to knick the frame slightly with a torch to get an exhaust manifold to pass by. I dont think you will have to do that with a 79.

P.S. It only sounds hard, it is pretty easy.

Thanks for everyone's input, I really appreciate it. Im still waiting to hear back on the 4wd right now. If I go ahead with this Im sure I will have more questions.
