DOVE heads with Price port plates.
Cobra jet heads with gasket Match

I am building a 15.1 BigBlock for a 5500 pond truck. Has to be OEM no Aftermarket heads or Block.
470 Limit
3.75 Stoke rule
i have both sets of those heads and a few spare parts. Can be a roller motor.
What would you guys build.

Must have been Chevy guys on the board of that club. Making you use 37 year old iron heads just so the chevy guys can try to beat ya.

I think one should try to find the old pattern that Ford used to make those heads and build some new cast Iron heads that can flow good numbers with out adding plates and still retain the OEM stamp.

I would go with the CJ heads. And of course port them. You might look at http://460ford.com/index.php?sid=562915352724e0ebb2b37bc2d752fabb there is a lot of info on that web site about Ford 460's

The CJ's will make more power than the Doves, hands down!

Alan:

Where are you at on your Cobra Jet heads I don't think we even heard if you got them and all the crap you were going though to get them. Never buy anything from Canada.

While I have made mid 700s in horsepower on a D0VE headed 472" motor and was quite impressed. These had a very nice intake port job and had MPG exhaust plates installed and ported. But, given that the D0VE's peak in flow numbers where the D0OE-R start stock. I would not gasket match the CJ heads, opening the mouth of the port will do little to nothing for the flow. The attention needs to be paid elsewhere.

Well the CJ exhaust port really is pathetic in its stock form, and though it can be helped with shortside radius work, bowl work and correct valve jobs. I still have never seen one flow much more than 200 cfm @28" on my bench. Yeah you may hear 220 cfm here or there, but I've never seen it on my bench and I've had some pretty so called "good CJ heads" on my bench. Now do some filling in there and, correct valve etc. I can make them rock-n-roll with the right valve. Problem with that is that they will then need a different exhaust flange and most people don't want to go their or can't spend the money to get their.

A max effort CJ head can make a lot of power with the right combo to go along with it.

As for secrets, first, I can't explain what all I do. Second, I have to make a living too.

Translation... "I gotta have some way to pay for my pulling addiction" LOL

Seriously, It takes experience and a flow bench to get everything out of a set of heads. That's why won't do my own...A little too much off in the wrong spot and a good set of heads are now junk....lol

Would you guys go with the 3.75 and as big a bore as possible or stay with the stock 460 stroke. Can not be under 3.75 stroke

What carburetor must you run? Tell me that and then I'll tell you what I think is the best way to go on bore and stroke. What's your cube limit??

No I can not run the pred but I can run a dominator. I was the only guy that ran one for a while and they re did the rules and took it away. I guess if I wanted to be a smart but I would run a different Variable Venturi carb because all it says is a Pred. That would ruffle a few feathers. No love down here for the Ford Guys.

If you can and will run a dominator... Put the shorter stroke in.
