I had one on Thrusday night But Sucked big time at it. Took 5th in Super Stock out of 21 trucks and 7th in Mod.out of 11 trucks. Gillett has always been one of the track I never really did good at.

Came in 5th out of 8. The truck came on nicely but some errors were made. When we got there, they ran street diesel and street gas classes. During those classes, the track seemed to be greasy at the starting line, then dryer and looser down the track. So, I aired down the tires and figured I'd run 3rd gear and come out of the hole easy then lay into it. Well, before our class started, the decision was made to pack it since they didn't run the roller during the street classes. As soon as that happened, the track completely changed and went to a mega power track. Everyone regreted earlier decisions, but whaddya gonna do???? This track was like bubble gum, and really sucked you down. When it was my turn, I pulled out on the track (mental note. before pulling onto the track, turn the hydraulic pump on) hooked up, and went throught the plan I had made, and executed it pretty much perfectly, came out easy then layed into it. The motor came up but no where near where it should have. At about the 150 mark, the truck seemed to bounce a little, so I lifted a little, let her set, then layed back into it knowing it cost me footage, but figured better to save the truck on the inagural run. In the end I accomplished my goal. Beat a guy I have not previously beaten and was within 6 feet of our normally strongest truck, and stayed ahead of a guy that I beat last year. Also brought home some cash and the truck in one piece. So it was a good night considering I've got a LOT of learning to do with the new setup. I'll upload some video as soon as I can get it off the camcorder.
Maybe you guys can help me. I haven't seen the video yet, but several guy's told me that I had sparks coming out from under the truck pretty much the whole run. The clutch didn't seem to be slipping, but I'm not sure what else it could be.
Lessons learned,
Don't air down until right before the class starts.
Hold the clucth longer
You have 3 gears to choose from, don't be afraid to use them... LOL
HEY ALAN CHECK THE NOSE CONE ON THE STARTER FOR WHERE THE SPARKS MAY BE COMING FROM FLYWHEEL MAY BE COMING IN CONTACT WITH IT IVE SEEN THAT HAPPEN BEFORE
Just teasing... Here is a link to a short video of our first run the other night. www.southernjusticepulling.com/movies/wolfscorners1.MPG
I had two cameras on it but unfornately the other end of the truck was recorded in nightvision and that didn't work to well in the daylight..

It would be cheaper to go back to "street" but I still wouldn't go back to a chebbie.

Alan did you seat that new clutch in before you pulled it? If not this could be your sparking problem, It seems to look like a clutch issue. If you don’t find a problem let me know and I will watch at Columbus. Walt
I didn't watch the video yet (at work) but that is what i was thinking too. I would guess that it was the clutch.

Ok, I guess I am dumb. What do you mean "seat the clutch in"? Travis had markings on the clutch to line things up, so I pulled the clutch, installed the flywheel and re-installed the clutch making sure to line up on Trav's markings. Then put the transmission up. I made a couple of 6k launches in the yard, then went to Bedford and hooked.
From what I could see on the video, I do agree that it is the clutch. But the motor didn't sound like the clutch was slipping. I was tied up all day yesterday so I'll be under the truck tonight.

Alan, All the guys down here including myself put some heat in a new clutch setup before turning it loose at a truck pull or at the drag strip, so consider the pull Sat. night as seating the clutch, some guys do and some guys don’t. Now for 3 FORDS in the top 5 that was cool wasn’t it, lets see if we can do it again at Columbus. Walt
For those that don't know. Walters Ford finished 1st, then Jesse Lang's Family Tradition took 3rd and My Horsin' Around took 5th. We got together and decided to let a couple chebbie in there so they wouldn't cry too bad. ROFL.
Now if you believe that, I've got a bridge........
the 90 series of ford is the best imo.
I have seen alot of trucks have that many sparks coming out on hooking tracks
if its right or wrong i cant tell ya.
awesome truck

Richard, I'd love to swing on down there and pull with you guy's BUTTTTTT, I'm afraid the cost to get there and back would NOT be in my favor. Also, My band is sponsoring a charity concert this Saturday evening and I'm sure they'd miss the bass strings and bass vocals.. what's a band without da bass man! Not to mention I'm the eye candy on stage.... LOL

Are you running pad clutches or sintered iron discs? It didn't really look like clutch sparks to me but looks like the bell housing area. Could be the fork like he said.
I'm sure glad you have a good sense of humor......lol
Good first outing, glad to see you on vid.

Not the driveshaft safety loops
July 8 2008, 6:41 AM
Checked the safety loops and there are no tale tale indicators of interferance. I'll have to slide the transmission back to check things out in there. I am using the 1.9x throwout bearing from Lakewood, so it should be back far enough to not hit the pressure plate, but I will have to check all that out. I wired in a couple of starter bump switches (one on each fender) last night and when I tested them, I didn't like how the starter sounded, so I'm going to pull it and check things out.

Alan, Did you intsall your bellhousing with a dial indicator? If not, your flywheel could be rubbing the inside of the bellhousing, especially if you are running a 184 tooth flywheel.

I think we found the problem last night. I put a quarter inch shim on the starter and now believe that I should have had more like 3/8". I pulled the starter last night and about .060-.070" has been chewed off the starter gear.
