Can any of you Colorado/Wyoming guys recommend a guest/dude ranch? My daughter is graduating high school next May (I hope) and she wants the old man to take her on a week long dude ranch experience. Plus I wouldn't mind going myself lol.

What would be even better is if we could rent a harley to ride out there, spend a week there and ride back. but I'm dreaming now lol
Plus we could possibly arrainge a meet also.

I'll be honest that I don't have any experience with dude ranches in the area, but here is a link to the Wyoming Dude Ranch Association. We live about an hour from the Wyoming border and I think its prettier the further west you go.

Here's the link: http://www.wyomingdra.com/

In Colorado, the association's link is http://www.coloradoranch.com/

Hope that helps!

Thanks guys. I had already been to those websites, and have been receiving emails from all the ranches but was hopeing for personal knowledge. What stinks is we were planning on doing this over spring break, but most don't start booking until June. So we may have to rethink the plan.

RE....trip

A good ol' fashioned tour of Colorado is pretty cool too!!

You could go through Denver on I-70 west to Rifle....Then southwest through Aspen.....Then over Independence Pass (Highest paved pass in lower 48!).....Then south to Salida, lots of 14ers.....Then West to Ouray past Blue Mesa Res.....Then South Over Red Creek Pass (cannibals, very scenic) to Durango......Then East to Walsenburg, Blanca peak (In Alamosa...crazy 4x4 trails).....Then back Home.

Lots of old Gold Mines, Narrow guage railroads, Mountains, reserviors, etc......

Yeah, its pretty unpredictable around that time. The best time of year to be in CO is Sept.-Oct.

What is the weather like in June or early August? If we go in the summer, I'll have to work around the pulling schedule lol. Seriously though, I'm kind've excited about the possiblity of being able to spend a week with her right before she heads off for College. Talk about one of those bonding times..

RE...CO summer

Its been in the 90's this past few weeks, but we are getting some good rain now. Dry heat....

Mountains are typically 20-40 degrees cooler depending on elevation. Freak thunderstorms up high also...

Another Option

August 21 2008, 3:07 PM

Alan,
We just returned from a trip to the Black Hills and found a fun place to stay. If you want to do the horse thing without the full dude ranch experience, you might check out the Mount Rushmore KOA / Palmer Gulch. We (me, my wife and three kids) spent the weekend at this KOA outside Hill City. It's probably the largest campground we've ever seen, but its one quiet place at night. They have tons of trails, some for horses and some for biking/hiking. They have both cabins (some are HUGE and like houses) and RV spots. We took the kids to see the faces, but they just wanted to get back to the campground to play volleyball, basketball, swim and rent the bikes.

The best part - it wasn't that expensive. Maybe you can even ride the Harley and take in Sturgis!

Glen Please don't tell too many people about South Dakota. I don't want a bunch of people moving here.

Hey Glen, thanks for the tip, I did a little research, and found some land right next to Digger, so I have contacted the agent, and am in the final stages of purchase.

LOL
