This particular pull, we used a smaller version of our big sled for technical reasons........ normally we don't use this sled, but being that it is quite a bit lighter, it starts very very easy, and it was a fun run..... 24.5 mph.... enjoy

i had to lift at about 250 feet.... 8000 is enough for me

Greg wasn't around so most of the expertise on the turbine went with him. The driver hadn't driven it before and we couldn't get it into gear once we hooked it to the sled. Then, the rpms dropped below the acceptable limits and it was too hot to restart.

This turbine has been quite the learning experience! I'm glad we have it, and we'll probably use the rest of the season getting the bugs worked out.

Greg's tractor didn't run so hot either. Something's wrong with the head/valves so I had to pull it in first gear. 250 feet in first gear isn't half bad!

Re Turbine

August 4 2008, 2:05 PM

Ok, so I'm curious, is there like a Walmart for Turbines? lol Seriously where does one go to find a turbine and the expertise to install it and operate it? And no I'm not planning to build one, just curious. Also, how do they compare in cost to a built BB.

Nah, more like a Target. But you've got to like Chevies to make them work!

Seriously, there are several places to get them but you have to hunt for the good ones. Many are surplus military or used aviation equipment.

I'm not a real expert on them, but from what I understand, this particular model is roughly 1,000 hp. There are much larger sizes and varieties, some producing upwards of 2,000 hp each.

This turbine has a story and ties to our group many years ago. Lee Roth used to pull parts of this tractor back in the eighties (I think the engine and fenders). Greg bought this one down by Jefferson City, MO.

Expertise? Not much of that here but they say once you get it set up, it takes very little to maintain and operate. So far that is true. I have seen motors around for as little as $2,500 and as high as $25,000. I guess you just pick your poison.

See there you go

August 4 2008, 2:27 PM

if your using Chevy knowledge to get them to "work" then someone with Ford knowledge ought to be able turn it into a winner....

Cool man, don't think I've ever seen a place around here to pick one up, so I was just wondering. Think I could fit it into my truck LOL

If we fit this one into a Coke can, I'm sure you could fit it in your truck!

It would be something to see...

Thanks. That's a first for me as far as I can remember. It was a good weekend. I took first with the small block and second with the big block on Thursday.

This weekend should be a fun one. The two pulls are only 35 miles apart, so we'll have plenty of down time between the two.

Will you be able to make these?
