I just bought a 97 chevy shortbed v6 for $300 from a friend that had a run in with the local authorities and can no longer drive. I also have a 1990 chevy long bed. What do you guys prefer for pulling the long beds or the short beds?? B/c one of them is gonna become a puller. Neither truck has anything wrong with them other than some rust starting to form around the rear wheel well on the 1990. Ive been collecting parts for the last year to build a pulling truck. So far I've got a 383 that needs to be assembled, a 435 manual trans, divorced np 205 and a np203/205 doubler. They will be converted to solid axle d60 front gm14bolt rear. My other question is on the cam what profiles do you guys prefer, low end torque/low rpm redline/valve float below 6000rpm or high rpm/high horsepower in the upper rpm ranges where redlines are at or above 7000rpm.
So longer wheelbase is better? I plan on running in the super stock class.

that 383 prolly isn't gonna be enough power in a super stock class. Best thing to do is find the rules that you will be pulling with and build the truck off of them
Only reason for the 383 is b/c it was a quick means to an end, took a fresh 4bolt 350 w/ .030 over, w/ new 3.75" crank and 12.5:1 pistions in trade for some other parts i had laying around. I can have up to 504ci, so while i'm looking for a big block It'll at least get me some practice and some drive time in the truck, I just want to have fun.
that is a lot of extra work and money..... if you are planning on a BB, then go with a BB .... less money in the long run.... get a tired 454 and build around it and upgrade later.
Most certainly the long box.

Motor is fresh from machine shop just needs to be assembled, came with crank, pistions, rings, bearings, heads, cam, lifters, pushrods, timing gear set. All i have to pay out of pocket is gaskets. Intake and carb I have laying around and a night putting it together in the garage.
. I traded a set of 3/4 ton axles I had w/ lockers and a np208 tcase I had for the motor. I found a running 454 for $300 up the road, but guy hasn't called me back yet. Every one seems to want $1500 or more for a 454 that needs to be rebuilt. One guy even tried to sell me a 396 basket case block for $1200. I wouldn't think that swapping out the sbc for a bbc would be that expensive other than the parts needed for the BBC to be built over a span of a year or so. In the meantime at least I could get some pulls under my belt.
