Scored a Sterling finally

I had the day off yesterday and I was bored off my ass, so I hitched up the trailer and went boneyard shopping. I scored a 10.25 sterling from a 93 f250 two wheel drive SRW. It had the 4:10's I needed to match my front and it's in awesome shape. The best part is that it was behind a 300 six, so I figured it had an easy life. Got it home and tore apart and the gears look perfect and the backlash is tight, The damn thing even had new shoes. Out the door for $150, which is by far the lowest I've been able to haggle around here. I'm heading out the door to sandblast, relocate spring perches, weld the tubes and throw some paint on it. We'll see how far I get. I'll post some pics later if I can remember.

By the way, I should probably introduce myself a little. My name is Jared Bishop, and I've been around pulling all my life. I grew up while my dad was pulling super stock with "Bad Habit" back in the early eighties. A couple years ago I came across an early 77 F250 highboy and made it roadworthy so I could drive it the 5 mile to work. The body is trashed, but the frame is in great shape. I pulled it twice with the old 400 that was in it before my brother convinced me to do a low buck 460 for it. Like most things do, the "460" build took on a life of its own. I got it all together in a rush to make my hometown pull in Arlington, WI. It broke the driveshaft and rolled over the spring perches at about 270'. A month or so later I pulled it again and blew up the dana 60. As of today, I sold most of my other toys and I'm looking to build a sweet ass street truck that I can take around to festivals and reliably have some fun. I want to keep it somewhat street-able because I love driving it. Now that I said that the next thing you know it'll be a super stock. Hopefully not, I don't have that kind of cabbage. I hope to make it around to a lot of pulls this year, and I might be helping out Mike and Charlie Manke at some of the NTPA events. Hopefully I'll get to meet some of you guys.

Welcome Jared.... Same Bad Habit?...http://www.network54.com/Forum/284001/

I'm doing the same thing to a Sterling. I'm amazed at how much bigger everything is on a Sterling. It makes a 60 look like a baby.

A Sterling is a Ford manufactured rear differential. Its supposedly copied from a Dana 70. Maybe not as strong as a Chevy 14 bolt. If you could find a Dana 80, 8 bolt wheel pattern would be the ticket.

Got started relocating the perches. Had to tow a buddy over and put a clutch in his YJ, so I didn't get very far with my own junk.

Jared: when you weld you new perches on if your running a spring pack rearend tip the pinion down 5 degres , so when you under power going down the track it straightens out with the drive shaft.

Hey Dan. I was wondering what to do about the pinion angle. I got it all mocked up at zero degrees, which is 10 degrees below what is in the truck now. I understand that I want it to be able to "wrap up" till it's looking at the t-case output. I'm just worried about it vibrating like a bitch going down the road.

Better be prepared to pay some serious jack for an 80. And the parts aren't cheap either.
