Ok i got some time... i apologize in advance for my crappy spelling and grammar. Ill do this in the syle of shazams writeup.

Friday nite after work my brother and i loaded up our trucks on to the semi so they would be ready in the morning. Just a few days before we had gotton a blizzard, so there was still alot of snow. So frostbite did some 4-wheelin before we even got to the pull (almost got stock in a 3ft drift). Got them loaded and strapped down with no problems, grabed a can of either and fired up the ol forklift and loaded our pallett of weights on to the trailer.

Being the nite of my first pull, i didnt sleep worth a damn. Spent most the evening reading NTPA magazines and reading the reddog forum lol. The alarm goes off at 5am. Jumped in the semi and took off. Its almost a 5 hour drive straight on just 2 differnt highways to broken bow, really not much to talk about there. Stoped for breakfast at Ken and Dales in Alliance.

We arrived around 11, 2 hours before the pull even started. So we where not rushed and every thing went smoothly unloading. I went to check the track right away to see what psi i want to run... i wasnt built yet. Then I proceded to the sign up. Signed up and put my name Chris Hayward. Got my class and weight cards back to put in my pickup and i was now chis haywood written on the cards...whatever.

While we where waiting for the pull to start my bro and i commingled for awhile. We where approached by a very nice gentleman. I feel bad now i didnt catch his name or forgot it. Anywho we start talkin about pulling and went on to talk about pulling on internet forums. Come to find out he looks at the reddog forum too. which was very cool then we having a ball discussing what conversations and such that have been on reddog. Then the drivers meeting started so that ended.

I entered in the light mod class which was the 2nd one to got after stock gas. After the first few runs i walked out to the track each time before the sled got back to the start. Checking the dirt. Then determined what psi i wanted to run. Watched my brother pull stock he did ok for his first time out with his truck. But failed to place in the top 5 both passes he made.

Well my turn. Fired up Frostbite drove over and tiped the scale at 5440 for the 5500lb class. Then proceded into the building, then waved to pull in to get hooked up. I kinda drove into the building and into the front of the sled like a BADASS...must have gotten it from sean in indiana lol. Now im hooked to the sled, the sled's light turns green and the green flag is out. I clean the carb... then slowly bring the rpms up to about 5500 and the clutch pushed me out of it and i start rollin. The rpms climb to 7000... FLASH...FLASH...FLASH... There must have been 15 people taking pictures as i come roaring down the track. I choose to go down left side and found there was a loose spot at 280 ft and stoped me at 285 good enough for 3rd.

My 2nd run in the 6500lb class was very much the same, except i went right this time. I towed it out to 298 for a 2nd place.

I pulled out of the building loaded the truck up and and headed home that evening with 35$ in prize money AND TWO UNBROKEN TRUCKS.

WELL... technically i got 75 back. but since i covered the spread on the 40$ in hook fees, i tell myself i won 35$. The light mod class isnt really popular, most of the pot money was for the big diesel guys some of which i saw in indiana, and the mod 4x4 class i think.

I forgot to say im retiring my engine, it comes out this weekend. The little guy just isnt cutting the mustard anymore.

Sean sounds like you had an interesting time 50 miles south of me lol.

Well, I'll let you hear my story... Keep in mind I'm still a stocker and not as badass as the rest of you that I watch for inspiration...

The night before the pull I ended up trying to chase down a short in the trailer I borrowed. I finally got home around 11:00 and needless to say, I couldn't sleep either. I finally got out of bed at 5:30 and hopped in my Powerstroke to head out. Got out of Chadron at 6:00... 4 hour drive... I'll be there at 10:00, an hour early, and have plenty of time to find the fair grounds and get unloaded. I picked up my buddy in Alliance and headed through town, passing a semi with Frostbite and another Chevy... Oh yeah, I'll be way early, right?.... About half way through the trip I see Frosty's semi barrelling down on me, and I look up to see that I'm entering Central Time Zone.... never thought of that. So, I let Frosty's semi around cause they know where we're going and I don't... We still were there by 11:00 for weigh in, etc... So I didn't feel so dumb about that.

My first pull I was as nervous as I've been in a long time. I was the 7th to pull at 5500 stock and was too worried about being in the right order to pay any attention to how things were going. I hooked up, took a deep breath and started to wrap the motor up... I got to 4000 and started to slip the clutch out which was too much, as my ceramic got too much of a hold and I began to bounce something terrible... let off and let it settle down and hit it again. My little 350 hit 5400 and and we bgan to slow down until the sled hammered us down at 275ish... I felt terrible, tied 8th of 12.

So I spent the next couple hours watching some good runs from the Pro Stocks that showed up as well as the diesels. I got my second chance at 6500lbs. I threw the extra 1000lbs of weights in and strapped them down... I aired up my back tires from 24 to 35 thinking that may have been an issue. I tried to relax a little and watch the trucks ahead of me. I eased the throttle up to 3000 rpm and started to slip it out. No bounce... hammered it and watched the tach climb to 6000... much better than my first pull. I ended up at 303.5. Which I believe put me 5th out of 14 trucks, including several big blocks. I can't complain at all, hell... I'm excited as can be.

The four hour trip home was un eventful. My Ford got 13+ miles per gallon with the cruise set at 65-70, which I can't complain about. I'm glad I went. It was a pretty good show and now I'm rarin' to build something bigger and badder... I guess we'll see what happens

Broken Bow

April 1 2009, 9:50 AM

Here's the link to my hook in the light class. My start definately left something to be desired, but it ran pretty good after that. I came back around in the heavy class and laid down a much better hook. We left without any carnage, got to meet alot of new people, and I got to pull inside for my first time so I say it was a good day!!
