Went to my first pull of the year on Saturday and got to try out all the new parts. My hoppin is finally gone. Thanks to the new Shazam hitch. Came in last place. I had in a 7000 rpm pill in my rev limiter and was up against it. The fuel I was running was 114 octane which was way too much. I didn't have enough tractor weights. Only weighed 5700#. Oh, and my new Omni-Trax tires work great.
Just curious Digger, why do you think you were bounce checking the rev limiter? Why do you think 114 octane was too much? And how did you determine your tires worked.

"Just curious Digger, why do you think you were bounce checking the rev limiter?"
Mmmm?
Looking at the video of the pull it was smoking real bad. Another puller told me I was probably running too high of octain. And I guess I really don't know if my tires were working other than I was able to steer the truck from the center of the track where they had placed the sled off to the side to avoid a soft spot about 2/3 down the track. I have been told by a few pullers that the tires would suck bad because of the bi-directional V pattern. This pull I had 28# of air in the front. Next time maybe I'll go lower.

I haven't heard of high octane causing a motor to smoke. Also, curious why you have a 7000 chip in it? IMHO, if you were on the chip either the tires aren't hooking up or your making so dang much hp that there wasn't enough sled to hold it back. Also, from experience, don't think your problems are solved based on one run on one track (however, I hope you do have it fixed)

Oh and how dare you mention video, and not post a link to it. LOL
there are two options of the 'other pullers' that told you that smoking is too high OCTANE .... i know who they are, but i will not incriminate them..... but octane has NOTHING to do with black smoke...... TOO MUCH FUEL TO AIR RATIO is what cause smoke ... period exclamation point period period period
more octane then your engine needs will require more timing and ultimately make you LOSE horsepower, but it will not smoke.
I went through this time and time again with the 'know more then everybody' people that your listening to..... and i will tell you something...... figure it out on your own, or ask someone that you aren't competing with in colorado...... take that advice dug, it's the best you'll ever get.
sean
ps... 7000 won't get you there.... 7600 with a good tire hook will get you close here in the midwest.... but then again.... i DON'T run a rev limiter at all....... if you wanna go slower, just put pressure on the pedal in the middle.

Dig, I have an 8600 chip in mine, but my bottom end may be build different/stronger than yours which is why I asked the question. On octane, you want as low as you can get by with with out detonation as a general rule.

Forgot to add; If your motor build can take it, then I'd suggest putting in a 7800 or 8000 or even higher if you have Titanium valves and the right bottom end.

Alan: I am still testing the water. New cam, rockers lifters, tires, hitch. All stock bottom end. 7000 RPM this time. 7600 RPM next time.

you're right dug.... those tires are great..... best tires on the market..... maybe everyone else will start using them....... oh wait... some have, and maybe that's why people can find used sets of them here and there......
and at 28 lbs.... lol..... the only part of the tire doing any work is the center zigzag
not tryin to bust your chops dug, but i'll tell you from experience, listen to walt and alan... they know more about pulling and particularly fords then the ding dongs 'advising' you saturday.

"7600 RPM next time"
Digger your a braver man than I with an all stock bottom end. Do you at least have H beam rods? I think I'd leave the 7000 chip in if it's all stock.
If that thing was blowing black out the pipe, way rich. I'd take some jets out and go 2 sizes smaller front and rear for starters. Even putting 112 in it I'd still take some fuel out. 28#s in the front , surprized it wasnt a jack rabbit bouncing. The fronts wern't doing much of nothing that hard. Mid teens for psi. I wouldnt turn much more that 7400-7600 at the most with a stock bottom. BUT , get it hook better and it might not even get up past 7000 !!!.
Oh and those H beam rods, soory not me or any motor I build for customers. Seen way to many of them folded in half and kinked. JMO I beams are for pullen and the H for the QTR mile.

Interesting obsessed. I have heard numerous times (by drag guys lol) that the H beams are stronger than the I beams at least in the Eagle/Scat stuff. I personally have billets in mine. I'm hoping he has the bottom end balanced. IMHO, 7600 on a stock bottom end is a ventilation waiting to happen, but I don't build motors, so I don't have as much experience as those that do. Oh and Digger said the smoke is grey/white and not coolant.
Digger have you checked the plugs? Also how much compression do you have?
this is what i was told by the guys at callies...... not to say it's correct, but..... I beams are stronger, but H beams are cheaper to make..... just what i was told.... i run h beams myself....
My opinion is rods has there place and in the pulling motors I beams are the way to go in my opinion. In my 522 I have Olivers at 1080hp turning 9000plus at times. What really kills rods is how heavy the pistons are. Nothing is harder on motor that pulling.
