Master Model Railroader, Richard E. Taylor and his company RailDreams®, was commissioned by Robert Allbritton to build a Zed model of the north and south ramps of the Gotthard line and they brought it to the National Train Show. The first inkling I had something spectacular was going to happen at the show was when I noticed the moving van at the docks. Soon we saw the layout take shape and it was spectacular.

It was approximately 59 feet long and averaged about 10 feet across. It had an Alp mountain on one side which housed a two loop helix. It towered over the length of the layout and seemed to be visible from anywhere around the layout. Some of the specs of the layout our mind numbing: Three hundred and fifteen pounds of wet shrub foam was used, there were 21,000 trees on the layout, approximately 2 miles of wire were used, there are 150 detecting blocks, there are 400 feet of actual double track line or about 12 scale miles of track, there are 120 structures with one being the actual church at Wassen, Digitrax DCC is used to run the layout, Uhlenbrock/Lenz/Digitrax/CT Electronics are the decoders used in the locomotives. The layout is controlled by a computer using RailRoad & Company with the LocoBuffer interface. You can control the layout using the computer as a walk around controller since the layout uses a WYFI connection for the Computer. The track is by MicroTrains and turnouts were by Peter Wright and Aspen Models. Trains are by Swiss Z Lines (www.ztrack.com). There are three stations with sidings on the layout.

RailDreams® (www.RailDreams.com) built the layout in 20 months and 13 people built it. They are located in the upper Michigan Peninsula and have been in business building peoples dream layouts for fourteen years.

The layout will be located in the Washington, DC area in a four thousand foot building. Bob Allbritton is planning on having an open house when the layout is set up and operating.
