Don,t know, it,d be nice though! I,ve yet to have a double out of there,or even see one in the water that looked like a double. Keep hearing about them though....

Nice to hear you,ve caught and seen doubles yourself.
Although there,s no monsters, I just enjoy fishing the water. There seems to be plenty of small water snails in the margins, though. I guess the deeper water is more barren though.
Have you had any mirrors at all ? I,ve just had one, a scale perfect linear.

No I've never caught a Mirror from SM. Although if you do manage to catch one they are usualy bigger than the average (6-8lb). What size was yours?
I agree that there is a lot of natural food and the weed growth appears to be getting stronger every year. I think they have stopped treating it in the last few years. I am disapointed to see that the Reeds have been cleared again from underneath the bridge and outlet.Other members tell me that is to try and stop the flooding. If this is the reason then I think it is a bit harsh. This used to be a place where fish would spawn and seek sanctury in the dense weed beds and how often does SM flood?
I only fish the margins and can not speak from personal experience about the deeper parts of the lake. Has any one had continued success in the deeper water?

Hi Martin, the linear I had was about 6lb or so. Like you , I tend to fish the margins in the warmer weather, but I did have a few fish in the 10-12 foot depth range in the autumn. I,ve never fished the really deep water !
Do you have much of a problem with bream ? I tend to put up with them, and think if the bream are feeding, the carp will be too!
Are there any decent carp in any of the other RFOD waters ?

Hello The severn Bore,
Yes I do get problems with Bream like every other Carp angler I know. It's seems mad but we can't stop catching them reguarly but coarse/match anglers struggle to catch them. It's very difficult to find a bait that they wont eat. I've caught Bream on large baits as well. Using pellets or ground bait realy seems to pull them in quickly. I usualy try and sit it out and wait for the Carp to move in, but this is difficult for me as I can only fish for short sessions. Also forget natural baits unless stalking. I've fished Lightmoor and caught a good number of Carp although they are not in good as condition as in Steam Mills. The other two waters that I have fished(only a few times)are Meadowcliffe and Waterloo Screens with little success. There are rummors that there are twenties in all three waters, but these have never come from trusted sources. I think that it could be the old case of the monster myth that every water suffers from. Have you enjoyed much fishing lately? I fished a short evening session at Steam Mills last week but caught nothing even though it was warm weather.

Hi. I fished a short session on S.M. on Friday evening (the 4th April). Warm in the sun, but when the sun went down it went a lot colder. I blanked, but a carper up the bank had 1 while I was there.
The water is extremely clear at the moment, even clearer than it normally is!
As regards other RFOD waters, I,ve fished Marion,s a bit, just had 1 low double, and some singles. I,m tempted to give Lydney lake a go, bigger fish, but a bit of a dump in my view, and a lot busier, carp-angler wise.
Going back to the bream, yeah, it,s funny that they seem to come out more to carpers on crude end gear compared to match anglers end tackle. I,ve noticed this before on a couple of clay pits in the Tewkesbury area that I used to fish. The carpers there used to catch loads more tench and bream than the match boys !
Regards, Kev.

I dunno Happy Carper, but I,ve only been carping since '85, and have only fished such local waters as Woodchester, Betula, Eastnor, Frampton,Mythe,Willow Pool,Bradley,s, Wick, Carp Lake Daiwa,Horseshoe etc-maybe one day I,ll get the skills.

Is anyone catching carp at steam mills at the moment? I did a 30 hour session down ther 2 weeks ago and caught 9 carp. The smallest was 6.5 lb and the largest was 11 lb. I had 1 mirror carp which was a bit over 10 lb.
