I think it would be very realistic to have any, if not most of the guys smoking.
Now, before anyone strings me up *g*, let me explain...
In the 70s, tons and tons of people smoked. The dangers of smoking had not quite made an impact on the majority (hadn't scared the smokers to death yet
. Added to that fact, most firemen smoked (according to a reliable source of mine). I think the main reason that we didn't see that particular bit of their life/personality on the show was the simple fact that it 'was' just a show, and the folks who produced it wanted to keep it clean-cut, thus Randy's short hair in the beginning.
That said, I doubt I would ever have "Johnny" smoking in a fic! LOL! And that's just because that was not what his character was all about...
