To generate some new chatter, I have a question. What is your favorite "awwww" moment on the series? It can be major or minor.
I have a couple of favorites, but I'll limit myself to just one...right now.
At the hot dog stand in "The Tycoons" when Roy and John were inspecting it. John moved past Roy and gently ran his hand over Roy's side, despite the fact that there was more than enough room for him to get by his partner without a touch.
Just in case u looked back at this message, I noticed a couple of things in the episode "Fools" that were kind of cute and wondered if this is what you mean: Roy & John are working on the squad and they are told there is a call from Dr. Brackett. Roy drops the cloth on John's head and takes off for the phone with John right behind. Also, I think this happens earlier in a scene with Bobby Sherman: John starts to tell Bobby Sherman the guy they brought in has been through a lot and Bobby Sherman says he doesn't need to be told anything by a fireman and after watching this episode a few times I notice that as John is getting angrier, Roy taps John on the elbow twice and says softly, "Let's go" and then brushes the front of John's jacket and they exit the room. Some of these types of things are so subtle and I think show how good they get along with each other.
I always found it so... <looking for the right word>... in "Snakebite" when Roy is making those nervous little fists outside the examination room. It speaks volumes about how worried he is about Johnny.
In the "awwww" category, I love it when Johnny is dealing with kids. Well... not ALL kids. When he's dealing with scared little girls, he's just the cutest! There's the ep where they try to treat the guy in the car and he drives off and hits the car with the mother and the dark-haired little girl. There's another ep where he's trying to get information out of the diabetic teenager's younger sister. There's "Loose Ends", where he's talking to Tina and not letting on at all that her father is dead. And there's the Molly ep where they're trying to get the girl's head out of the ironwork coffee table. He talks to them calmly, calls them "sweetheart", and in the case of Molly's daughter, giggles that cute Johnny giggle.
I think I find cute (touching) scenes in every episode. One I was watching today was The Hard Hours.; It had so many,Dixie and Kel discussing Joe's heart problem, Roy and John remembering Joe's words about Cap's clam chowder, Chet being Chet (asking for more chowder) and Cap talking to Roy and John twice to determine if they had a problem. I loved it when he said .... "we know each other pretty well, our shift has gotten to be kind of like a family". The look on both Roy and John's faces was just priceless. That's enough from me for now.
Frequency!! My all time Fav epi!! The look on Roy's face when Brackett comes out to tell Johnny Drew is dead. The look on Roy's face when Johhny is telling Brackett about how he feels about the transmission getting delayed & how it could have effected Drew's death. The scene between Johnny & Roy when Pam Burke calls Johnny when she is leaving town. SIGH. I have watched that one so much I can practually do the dialog on my own. LOL. The feelings between the two partners is so VERY clear in that one!!
To Jan, in case u look back at this--about that Frequency episode. You said it's your absolute favorite and I was just wondering if you could refresh my memory about something. I saw that episode a few months ago and thought it was really a good one and a scene that stood out was when John & Roy are talking in the squad. Unfortunately I don't have this one on tape. Does John tell Roy something like he really wished Roy would have been the one to tell Drew's wife--what was said exactly?---I just remember it got to me but can't remember how it went. If you wouldn't mind, could you go over the dialogue from that scene? Thanks very much!!
Frequency is one of my favorite episodes, as well. And I have it on tape. I think some of the dialouge went like this. (I'm a bit fuzzy, so if I left anything out, let me know.)
Johnny: You know what I was thinkin', when I went to tell her? I was wishing that you had gone in my place. Guess it's just a weakness of character.
Roy: No. Just shows you're human, that's all.
Johnny: Yeah.
As I said, it went something like that. I haven't watched that particular tape too much to remember the exact dialouge.
You are right about something cute or touching in probably every episode!! And speaking of "priceless" I was thinking that about the look on John's face in that episode of "Fools" when Bobby Sherman shows up at the station to spend time with the paramedics. Roy is being nice and says "We'll get you a turnout coat and helmet" and John just has this look that, well priceless, and then they are in the squad heading for the call about a person stuck in a mailbox, and Bobby Sherman asks Roy how fast he's going and Roy answers and then Bobby Sherman asks if they've ever been in an accident and John just says, "NOPE" and just with that one word, the way he says it is soooooo perfect! Well, I better stop it already!!! Sorry to mention "Fools" so much, it is one of only a few I have on tape and therefore have memorized!
Yep, these are the type of moments that I mean. Obviously the series was terrific and the sense of friendship quite strong, but it's the little things that make it special for me. You have hit the nail on the head about every episode having an awwww moment, sometimes so subtle that you might miss it the first time through, but upon watching again you pick up.
I always liked when Roy dumped cold water on his partner in the shower (I'm without my notes right now, so I can't give you the episode title). Very playful!
Found another cute scene to mention--I think the episode is called, Gossip. First: John is mopping the floor in the opening of the show & Roy & Chet start bugging him about running in the Fireman's Olympics. When Roy says, "You were the star" and John says, "Well, I was pretty good, but I wasn't the star"< Very cute scene there!!! And then, the scene where Roy & John are standing in front of the mirror, John is telling Roy why he ran track in school (a girl) and Roy says, "a girl" and the camera is showing them from behind and u see their faces in the mirror, the way Roy is watching John & then tells him how he'll be a hero to every guy in the dept. if he runs & John says, "It's not quite the same thing," and then later on, after he went for a practice run, John is telling Roy how it went; he's half-sitting, half-lying on the sofa & says, "I hurt from my toenails up to my... " and the alarm sounds> cute scenes, all of them!
Yes, I got out the Gossip episode to watch again. I love it. Randy does have such cute expressions listening to the dispatcher, doesn't he? "Child stuck on an elephant"... And that hurts from toenails to.., that was just perfectly timed. I really enjoy his shirtless scenes (I'm old, not dead). John got to do everything in this one, mop and use that blow torch thingy on the armored truck, crawl around on a quarter of a million dollars, and he and Roy sure looked cute on the ladder rescuing that electrocution victim and dashing out the burning building.
Yep, the timing was perfect in that scene and the expressions at the beginning, well in each of the scenes, so cute!!! Another episode with such cute scenes that was aired the week before Gossip called, I'll Fix It, has John & Chet (very nice close-up where they are working on the motorbike) trying to fix the bike and seeing John's face when he comes back to the station and Chet has the bike competely taken apart just in time for Dixie to come pick it up--then the look on their faces with Dixie, well, cute, cute, cute. But what is really a funny scene is where they go to the delicatessen with the guy that has the ring stuck on his finger. The kid is in such a panic and he tells Roy & John, he's gonna die, and then he says the husband is "right off the boat from Transylvania,"! and then Roy goes up front and sees the guy coming and gets back to the kid & John and now Roy knows why the kid is so shook up & then u see John's face!!! It is so funny and sorry to say cute AGAIN. These scenes go by so fast, but they are so funny and yeah, just perfectly timed!!!
Omg terry I totally forgotten about that episode, as soon as I read your post it all came back to me lol .. the frightening look on both John and Roys face that was priceless. Been a while since I watch the show but I agree every episode has those moments that we dont catch on the first run of watching them. The small touches, the little words, that go on between everyone. I like the Dixie,Johnny,or Dixie Johnny and Roy bantering at the nurses station. A rare one that I noticed was the one when Kel Bracket was in the car accident. Where Mike Morton touches Dix and says You ok babe. That was a tender moment for Morton and a rare one.
I think that was a great one too. I didn't really hear what Dr. Morton said to Dix, but he seemed very supportive. What I enjoyed a lot was Johnny examining the girl's dad. Without words he demonstrated so clearly his emotions, dread, sadness, certainty, double checking to make sure the guy was dead, even thought he knew he was. All the while keeping up comforting words to the little girl. (She seemed abnormally calm, must have been shock). Then he notified Rampart who the patient was and went running into the hospital to help Dr. Brackett in the treatment room. He even clasped Dr. Brackett's hand and offered any help he could as he and Roy left. And I must say I enjoyed watching him working on the fan belt on the squad. What a great episode. I can see why its the inspiration of several good fan fic stories.
You know you are right. its been a while since I seen that episode but I agree. and Dr Bracket showing off his emotions in the hospital something you dont really see everyday. When Roy told Johnny it was Dr.Bracket the look of surprize on his face. That was an awesome episode for all of them.
There was a bit near the beginning of the episode
where someone of the gang was filing into the common room next to the kitchen while Johnny was mopping the floor. All I remember was that Johnny said..
AH..ah ah!! to stop this person, who froze immediately in his tracks. And then Gage grinned with a cat that ate the canary look and continued his casual whistling mopping. Remember that?
Priceless.
Another moment was when Johnny admitted to feeling a sick feeling in the pit of his stomach at every child call and this heart melting sad melody of flutes and harp was in the background while he was talking to Roy who gently gave him his advice about dealing with it.
That's all that leap out at me. It's been over 25 years since I've seen most of these shows. I've since gotten some satellite feeds from work of all of them so I'll be updated in the coming months.

I belive that is the Gossip episode with Johnny mopping and then teasing Chet. Chet then puts up the (?) sign-up sheet for The Firemen's Olympics. John does get mopping duty in 2 or 3 more episodes. I can't remember too many details from 30 plus years ago, so I'd be lost without the Tvland tapes and Columbia House. I really enjoy both the episodes you mentioned.

I think the episode u mention first about John mopping the floor is called Gossip and it is Chet who comes in but halts when John says, AH, just like u put it and then John does have the look like the cat who ate the canary--real cute scene at the beginning of that episode, the whole scene til the tones sound!!! It's funny how some things just stick with u until u see them again---since I have been seeing the show again I know there are some things I watch and I remember the scene like I just saw it yesterday and then some things that are jumping out at me like I am watching them for the first time. Just recently saw Camera Bug, Quartet, Details, Parade, Bash & Transition--this last one the one where Roy gets hit with the venom from the cobra and that was one that came right back! Poor Roy!!! Now I can't let this moment go by without mentioning the stuff in Camera Bug! -- John jumping all over the place trying to get pictures--wow--a real cute scene where he is kind of straddling the squad and the engine trying to get a picture of Roy and he jumps down, Roy flinches and John laughs, and says he's sorry, and tells Roy to go back to the cab to get another picture of him this time close-up with Roy changing the oil. And John is so into it and he says, "Yeah, that's it," as Roy pulls out the oil stick, "OIL, DRIPPIN' DOWN THE STICK!!" And nice close-ups of them as John puts the camera back to his face, and then he says the camera is jammed and tells Roy he'll be right back. Roy starts to go after him because he wants his wrench and as he gets to the lockers u hear John mumbling and then Roy opens the locker door and John says, "I saaid, DON'T OPEN THE DOOR OR YOU'LL EXPOSE THE FILM!" Then another scene where the cap wants all the guys to listen to an announcement and John snaps another picture and the cap says, "Ya twit" cause he is blinded! so John says he's sorry and he should maybe just take the pictures outside and he gets in line right next to Roy and as he takes the camera off from around his neck, it hits Roy in the head, and Roy looks a little annoyed, then John pats Roys head!!! Well, u know what I am going to say next--Oh, God, they are so cute!!! Sorry! The thing about that scene, though, is when I watched it the first time, I didn't catch the last part, not until I watched it over on tape!!! Well, I better stop again!

Just wanted to mention a couple other things from this episode, Camera Bug! When John tells Roy he wants to get another picture close-up he said "check the oil," I put changing the oil and meant checking, that was buggin' me--anyhow, this is also the episode with the scorpion, and John holds it up in front of his face--that was a pretty nice close-up, even with a scorpion in front of his face he is still sweet to look at!!! Now thru this whole episode, Roy is being pretty patient with John trying to get his shots and finally Chet says to John, "Hey, I got an idea, why don't u take a picture of us all jumping up & down on your camera?"!! and John says, "Oh, c'mon Chet, this is for us ALL!" Then the scene with the cap and John blinding him, as he snaps another picture, and then the final scene after they have the rescue of a guy in a truck with 20 cases of dynamite, where John cuts into the steering column to free the guy who WAS conscious til the force of the steering wheel being cut smacks him in the head--u actually see Roy cringe when this happens! I was wondering if they could have freed him some other way or maybe it didn't hurt as much as it looked like it would have!! 'course, maybe they just have to hurry because of all that dynamite in the truck--anyhow, John really is struggling to get this guy out and finally he does and then they are all struggling to get the guy up the hill. Next scene, Stoker is putting up the flag so I guess that always means it's a new day--now here is what is sweet--John comes in trying to get Roy's attention, who is on the phone finding out the stewardess (bit by the scorpion) and the guy they rescued from the truck are actually going to be okay (nice to know since he took that hit in the head from the steering wheel when John cut it!) and first you see him patting Roy on the back, then his arm, then his wrist, til Roy finally hangs up the phone and tells him the good news. Now John has HIS news about the paper considering his work and then pulls out the photo that they paid him 25 dollars for--he's so happy til Chet points out everyone in the photo--"Captain Stanley, Marco, Stoker, Roy," and of course John himself, but not Chet, who actually took the picture!!! One of the things I think makes John so appealing--he's striking out once again--but he's always out there trying his best!!!
I always wondered about that rescue too. It looked like the poor guy got really whacked. But I enjoyed that episode, all the guys got to look cute, even Chet. They were so cute when John was trying to get the right pose for Chet against the green map.
They WERE cute when John was trying to get the right pose with Chet at the map! Did u by any chance catch the dialogue as that scene begins? It opens with John saying, "Okay, now really rub it! Okay, ready? Harder!!! Don't look at me! Just work! Good one, good one!" He innocently says this to Marco who is hard at work polishing some chrome on the engine!! Then he and Chet head over to the map! I have never seen any scripts from this show, but would really love to!
I am so jealous. I haven't seen Emergency for over 25 years and reading all these cute moments is making me so envious. I am enjoying reading these scenes. At least I can re-live it in some way.
I have several but will narrow it down to two...One is the episode where the guys take a little boy who has swallowed ant poison to the hospital and he dies. Chet has been hiding exploding water bombs to get Johnny for days. When the guys come back to the station after the little boy dies, Chet stops Johnny from opening up the cabinet so he won't get "bombed." He even tells him that the "Phantom" doesn't want to strike at times like those.
Another is in Snakebite when Chet is so worried about Johnny. It is neat to see that character feeling that way. In that same episode, when Chet visits Johnny in the hospital, Chet is upset that the nurse from the small town didn't remember him. Johnny says, "Well, I do and that's all that matters." Even though the two characters pick at each other, they obviously like each other. From what I know about real firefighters, that is exactly how they are.
I also enjoy those two episodes. In Snakebite, I think they all had chewing gum. I had to laugh at Chet when Johnny asked him whose side he was on and Chet replied "Chets". That scene around the table was really cute. Mike had an unusual moment when ,almost annoyed, he said "big deal" after Johnny told about the events of the trip. And even Marco said "I don't believe it" when Cap praised the rescue. Then later at the hospital when Cap, Mike, and Marco were outside the treatment room looking in, it was great. No dialog, just their body language spoke eloquently of their concern and caring.
