....are you wet-sanding/polish between alternate coats? Depending on color, sometimes that makes a big difference.
Another thing, if you go for a deep black, after three coats of black, go with a coat of dark blue, then go with 4,5,6 coats of black. The more coats the deeper....the blue helps maintain depth and solidarity when looking laterally across the surface....
