your explanation definately sounds plausible.

One point I think is important is that their avoidance of humans is the key to their success as a species.
That also confuses me when you hear of them invading farms, etc. where the risk of being discovered is high.
I suppose this could be explained by hunger/lack of available food or possibly being pushed out by others of its kind, or .......logging companies.

Migration habits, water, the reasons are many however they must be feeling some type of desperation to come close to humans. Remember any time humans involve themselves in animal management a disater is soon to follow.

In many ways I believe them to be smarter than some humans.
