I had one for a couple of years and YEH, when there's ambiant light, you can see a long ways in an open field. I could actually see some small critter (coon based on it's movements) across a small lake at about 100 yards.
In the woods is a different story. You can see a good ways if you've got scattered timber and no thin underbrush when the moon is up but once that moon sets and you're using just star light, things get grainy.
It's very difficult to make out good details at maybe 30 yards or so. Anything past that and it's a best guess on what you're seeing.
If somethings out behind a bush past 30 yards and moving slowly, you'll never see it. I sat out a many a night using them so I can speak from expierance.
Gen 3's are best if you're walking out in an open pasture or in a Hardwood bottom that's been cleared. I will say though that it was fun walking around at night with them strapped to my head. I could sneak up on Nessa and scare the crap out of her LOL
