I asked for species, diet and DNA possiblities. My vet consultant, who suggested A&M said he didn't think the would/could do DNA. He reported back to me that they could not determine species and when I asked about diet, he said they didn't say specifically what they thought it was eating but Dr Hughs said in his opinion the sample looked "human-like". I told him originally that I thought "it might be chimp" as it was taken about 800 yards from chimp haven. They did comment that it was curious that I thought it might be chimp but couldn't say much defininitive beyond 'don't know".
(as you might guess, I thought this might go this way, so I went back out and got the other bolus but surprisingly it had been stepped on and crushed. I barely found it under some leaves and pine needles smushed, but the smell was same only slightly faded after several more days. IT WAS NOT a mule that stepped on it and there are no other mammals besides us out there. There is a trailer house very near by but they never even seem to come outside in my experience.
if you folks can recommend a DNA lab, I have preserved a little more of this scat.
