      reminded me of a story about a place in the Panhandle of Texas called "Stampede Mesa" and also of another Texas ghost story called "The Line-rider." Look up Ed Syers and see if these two stories are online. They are both good ones, especially the one about the mesa, which is still avoided by ranchers to this day for what happened there back in the 1880s.
