Rick Tuggy Passfield Memorial
7 on 7 Field Lacrosse Tournament
The 4th Annual Tuggy Weekend was a huge success, and all from a large group effort. The event started will an army of volunteers congregating at the fields to lend a helping hand, and it lasted all weekend long until we packed up Sunday evening. It was evident to me that nothing like this can be done without the help of a lot of great people. From the Passfield family, their friends, and all those outstanding folks in the lacrosse community who chipped in to help, as well as the referees who were outstanding with their generosity, and donations in their time to allow for this event to happen.
The fields were set up and the games got under way at 10am, with games occurring on 4 fields. Our numbers were excellent both in players, volunteers, spectators, and family members who came to join in the fun. We hosted 14 teams from across the Province, and had a few players even make the trip from the United States to join in the fun, six teams of which were mixed teams from across the Durham Region.
In the U-16 Division the teams competing were: K-W Shooters, Akwesasne, Six Nations, Fireball, Cardinals, and Oshawa.
An undefeated Fireball team claimed the A-Division Title with a close win over a very strong Akwesasne team. The Cardinals were victorious over a strong Six Nations team, and claimed the B-Final. Oshawa and K-W played in an exciting C-Final, with Oshawa ending up with the win.
In the U-19 Division there was a great deal of talented lacrosse played, and some future lacrosse stars were on hand to showcase their talent. They are going to be big names in the not so far future, and some already are. In the U-19 Divisions the teams were Akwesasne, Silvia, Beaches, Benchwarmers, Innisfil, Tugg Boat, Storm, and Shockers.
An unbelievable Akwesasne team captured the A-Title with a convincing win over a strong Silvia team put together with local talent from the Oshawa area. Akwesasne was undefeated and put on a real show, and I think everyone enjoyed watching the ball movement and sharp shooting from these boys. Team Silvia made some real nice plays, but could not seem to slow down the powerhouse of the Akwesasne attack. In the B-Final Beaches won over the Benchwarmers in the last game of the day. For The C-Final the Innisfil Wolfpack won over the Tugg Boat team. In the D-Final the Storm were victorious over the Shockers. A full weekend of clean play, great sportsmanship, and incredible talent. Very nice to see.
A special thank-you needs to be made to those who really carried the tournament volunteer team. I am sure most people out there know Linda Hurren, and would agree to say she is an amazing lady. All of the off field tables, activities, food, and prizes were handled Linda and her staff of volunteers, and they did a fantastic job. Also to the referees who called over 38 games in two days, a real generous gift to the game by donating their time to help the cause. We thank you ten times over, and it wouldnt have happened without you. Jim Price scheduled the refs for the weekend, called games, and was a treat to work with.
There are countless volunteers, both family and friends who were willing to do anything that needed to be done, and were instrumental in how well this event ended up. A special thanks to Steve McCarthy for the team jerseys, prizes, balls, and continued support for the 4th year in a row. What a great guy and supporter of the sport. Thanks to the Pack Family for the Field Signs, Grosner Collectibles for donating prizes for the kids, as well as Shaydon Santos for donating some nice apparel from the California LAX Academy. Another special thank you goes out to Terry Lloyd for helping get the fields prepared and to his staff at the Oshawa Civic for their help all weekend with whatever we needed. Terry is a pioneer of field lacrosse in Oshawa, and was a great contributor to our event, and always has been.
Mark the weekend on the calendar for next year, because we plan to grow both in size ad popularity. To say it went well would be an understatement. It was a great accomplishment, only because it put a smile on the face of almost everyone in attendance, and all in an effort to put a smile on the face of a young lacrosse player somewhere in Ontario.
We will be sending out a follow-up posting to communicate the money raised, and more information on where the donations will be directed from our 2010 event. We wanted to make sure people received the recognition they deserved, and to give a recap on a great weekend, if you missed out this year please get out and support us next year. We are always looking at ways to improve, so if you are willing to help in the future, we would love to have you onboard.
