Anyone know what this setup was?

As a kid, I recall playing in an old derelict car whose styling was the typical for early '50s.

Anyway, I distinctly recall the car having a stalk shifter with the typical PRNDL indicator... and two square floor pedals - as in clutch and brake!

Now this puzzles me: Did some early "automatic" trannys also have clutches? If so, for what purpose? (And doesn't that actually make them non-automatic???)

Anyway, here's hoping someone can clue me in about what this arrangement was - and how it worked. I don't even know what it was called, so I haven't found anything in searches...

TIA!
