I don't know of a single USA domestic car from the 50's that would have had such a setup as original equipment, but I guess there could be. What you may remember is a car that originally had an automatic transmission (thus the drive selection indicator you mentioned) and someone had changed it out for a stick shift - installing the second pedal for the clutch. That would be my best guess.
