Hope I'm not too late with the advice. This stuff is toxic as hell, but is absolutely the best metal primer you can buy over-the-counter. Light gray, dries to a semi-gloss finish. Make sure the surface is completly clean (Marhyde sells a metal prep/cleaner, but a good scrubbing in acetone or laquer thinner should be sufficient. Rough up the surface a bit too for some bite (400 grit should do it). Stuff sprays very thin so you have to build up the coats. You can then use a regular primer on top of it to fill any small scratches or pits.
For a few years, I made some decent money painting die-cast Miatas and PT Cruisers to match owners cars.
