My apologies if this has been previously answered, but
what is the right sequence for bare metal foiling:
before or after gloss coating/polishing the body?
Thanks to all
JFM

JFM, I would do it AFTER you polish and clearcoat the body

I've made the mistake ONCE of using Bare Metal Foil to replicate an unpainted section of gun barrel on a 1/35 tank. I forgot and shot DullCoat on the tank to seal the decals and the BMF went dull. I would imagine that even if you used a gloss coat, the foil wouldn't look "natural".

HTH,

If you put a clear coat on top

It will become dull. The stuff does tarnish though... not sure how to fix that. Also, avoid decal setting solutions... stuff in it (they smell like Vinegar) can mar the silver finish.

A good quality lacquer or urethane is your friend.

Either can be shot over BMF with good results. If you choose to do so you will usually need to polish out the surface again.

Sorry, I haven't been online over the last days. Thanks for your hints. It looks like I will just need to try both options. Any recommendation regarding lacquer or urethane (I am using Model Car Garage paints)?
Cheers
JFM

Out of the spray can either Tamiya Clear lacquer or Duplicolor Clear.

I don't use urethane clear coats myself, but a number of others that post regularly on Spotlight have. Both the above mentioned brands will do better if you set them in a pan of hot water about 20 minutes before spraying. They flow out much better when heated.

Some clear over BMF some prefer not to, mostly its just personal choice. I usually do to keep the foil from lifting in the future as I have had it do in the past.

Another alternative that is safer if there is any question about paint compatibility is Future. I have never had it react to any paint its been used on.
