Variable thickness CHICOM chrome-plated plastic........

Tried the ol' Easy-Off chrome remover trick on my GT-40 sprues this AM. Chrome on the smaller sprues melted off before this curmudgeon's eyes in only about two minutes, no brushing agitation needed. The larger sprues, however, required MUCH longer to dissolve the chrome, more on the order of twenty minutes, and there are some smaller sections where even successive applications of the potent spray didn't do the job.

# Variable thickness CHICOM chrome-plated plastic........

Phil, not being a car builder in over 40 years, what is the procedure here? Do you use the spray on Easy-off and set it in a pan or is this something better done outside over newspaper? I assume a toothbrush with a tad of Bondo Industries Elbow Grease liberally applied may be required.

Frank: I went out to the garage and simply sprayed the stuff....

(use the heavy duty, stinky grade) in the confines of the wash sink. Didn't use a pan, just layed the sprues on their edges to "soak". The plating on some of the sprues simply "melted" away in a coupla minutes without any brushing whatsoever. The tougher stuff I brushed (after spraying another Easy-Off coat) with dishwashing soap and a dish brush. After all was dry, I primed all the sprues with Dupli-Color laquer-based gray filler-primer so I can see any seams and sand 'em.

Phil

Try Westley's Bleche-wite whitewall tire reconditioner and cleaner. I just fill up a cup and add the chrome parts and wait about 25 minutes. Then wash off plastic with water and an old toothbrush. Much quicker and cleaner then brake fluid.

Bleche-Wite usually works for me

I also use Castrol Super Clean to good effect. It's been about 10 years since I've used easy-off and as I recall it took a good amount of elbow grease to complete the job.

I was initially put off by the big Gt40 but the Bondo build is giving me a chance to re-evaluate, get after it Phil!
