Response to Cementing Vinyl Figures

What with summer approaching, there will be several repair kits available for vinyl wading pools. Vinyl cement has a distinct "buttery" aroma, and is THE thing for nailing vinyl stuff together. CA usually works, but has a nasty habit of failing at just the wrong time (voice of experience). Once the parts are joined with vinyl cement, the joint is tough, but remains flexible.
I usta use Dupli-Color Classic Platinum Primer as my base coat. But, since EPA forced Dupli-Color into the water-color business, I haven't found a really good primer. Other than going to an automotive etching primer, anyone have any good ideas?
