Painting Faces my weakest "skill"

I am an armor modeller alas not a figure painter. I had a friend who is is very good at this give me a block of instruction once a few months ago. I took notes but when I attempt to replicate his technique I run into a problem.
I base coated the faces of five figures by various venders with Humbrol #63 and let dry overnight. No problem.

Using artist's oils, I mixed Gold Ochre and Burnt Sienna 50/50 and brushed on. Let dry for at least an hour. Still good to go. My 3rd step was Cadium Yellow and Yellow Ochre mixed 50/50 and applied to the highlight areas with a thin brush. This tends to cause my paint to "clump" up. I am using Turpenoid to clean my brushes but used the paint directly from the tubes without thinning as I don't recall my friend doing so.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and would very much improve my armor projects.
