Hello,
I am a long time modeler but I am new to figures. am working on a 120mm SOL figure and I am trying to build on a black primer. I heard abot this technique from a chap at my local IPMS chapter meeting. It makes sence to do this but I am looking for a heads up as to what some of the potential pitfalls may be from some experianced figure painters.
ie the d&d painter crowd has had good success w/ black. I personally don't understand how black can work, but, the guys in the mini crowd sure can do it, so, with that, I'd suggest going over to www.coolminiornot to take a look.
I use black primer for small, highly detailed war game figures. The black primer is useful for so called speed-painting. Basically you paint it black, then dry brush on the color leaving the black show for shadows. Works great say, on Warhammer Fantasy or 40K figures if you are doing a whole army in a day.
For larger figures where you will be laying on solid layers of color, use white or light grey. I like the Tamiya spray primers, although there are others including Games Workshop and the old standby - FLoquil
