What color were pre-WWII US Navy helmets?

Posted this on Ship Chat but maybe more applicable here. A friend is doing a US Navy figure similar to a character from the movie "The Sand Pebbles" and wondered what color the WWI style helmets should really be. I think they were OD in the movie but maybe a gray or blue gray is more accurate?
