Verlinden U-Boat Commander

Hello: I'm painting the Verlinden bust of a U-Boat Commander. I can't determine the color of the shoulder straps from the photograph on the front of the box. Dark blue? Black? Piping in any color, white or silver? The little pips on the boards look to be gold. Correct? Also, the cap band appears to have some sort of decorative piece above the left ear, but I can't tell what that is...or is it a flaw in the molding? I painted it silver, but now I'm having second thoughts.
