When I was in Fayetteville, AR, they would salt the roads and sidewalks before a big snow storm. Once it was over, they would scrape all the snow off the ice and leave it as is. Keep in mind the salt is UNDER the ice. The roads and sidewalks were just as slippery afterwards as they would have been had they done nothing. They did the same thing for all 4 major snow storms I experienced there.

Here in the Mid-South, people go nuts at the mere mention of snow and start stocking up for a 2 week blizzard. Most people here can't drive in the middle of summer on dry roads. It's much worse when it snows.
