This always made us missileers laugh--we used to be assigned .38s in the LCC (Launch Control Center) for "protection". We joked that anyone that could get past the heavily armed security forces upstairs, then get down the elevator and through our 4-foot concrete blast wall, wouldn't be put off by a .38. Therefore, we thought it was to put in our mouths if such an occurrence happened... Someone eventually saw the stupidity in this weapon and they took them away.
