It is not an issue of morality, but rather a different type of market. Gas station X may well have bought gas at $3 per gallon, but if Gas station Y across the street lowers the price, then Gas station X will invariably follow suit.
Lots of gas station go out of business, the market is volatile and not as lucrative as you would believe. That is why they try to sell you a Diet Coke, a donut, and a pack of smokes before you leave.
