..painted with large swaths of irregular camo on their sides to, I assume, break up their outline on the horizon and make them harder to distinguish to other boats or subs.

I have not, however, seen any examples of this in modern warships. Is this not case any longer and would a paint scheme such as I describe be inappropriate for any newer vessels?
