Photobucket observation/speculation

I recall last week when someone posted a large number of photos on Plane Talking and they were quickly replaced with a notice that "Bandwidth has been exceeded" at photobucket. At that time, I became aware that you could go to your "account options" and actually get recent statistics on your most popular photos. As a free user (I'm cheap) you get limited stats but it is an eye opener.

Not surprisingly, things you've just linked to get the highest traffic. For example, I linked to pictures of my "Mummy" model in Plastic Pix and they got over 800 views yesterday!

However, I also notice some STRANGE statistics.

I have many hundreds of photos on photobucket. I probably have almost 200 car photos. For some reason, this photo of the Cobra is consistently in my top Five most viewed photos. Yesterday, it was second only to my just posted Mummy model pictures. Everyday, this picture in in my top five. And I don't honestly recall if I've ever posted a link to it. Maybe I did...6 months ago. Oh, a few months ago I did post a link to a couple of SIMILAR (and better) Cobra photos taken from the passenger side but I don't remember linking to this photo. For whatever reason, people look at this more than ANY OTHER CAR photo I've ever posted.

On a related note. You also get stats as to WHERE your views are coming from. Netwrork54 shows up as it obviously accounts for my model views. Some hits come from the dpreview site where I occasionally post photos. Now, again it get's strange...I'm getting views from Myspace. I don't have a Myspace account and I've certainly never posted a photo there. I wonder if somebody on Myspace has taken a liking to that Cobra photo and linked to it?

It's fascinating to see what people are looking at.

**Note that I've actually posted the Cobra photo here from Imageshack so as not to further distort the photobucket stats.

Somebody has..

"hot linked" your photo... They've just copied and pasted the link to the photo on their page. Happens all the time.

Cheers,
Dave

Dave is probably correct. Best way to fix that is add a number or letter to the tag

See if it changes the hits.

Photobucket

There is no such thing as an unbuildable kit, just some kits one may consider not worth building.

For the Time Being

I'll leave it alone for now and just keep an eye on things.

Even though its generating traffic, it's just 100kb and it's actually having an immeasurably small effect on my bandwidth usage. I'm very liberal in my 'net thinking...if I put it online, I accept that it's likely to spread beyond my immediate control. Generally speaking, that's OK. If people want to see a pretty car picture I won't fuss.

I'll just make sure it stays within limits. A couple of dozen views per day of 100kb file is fine. I'll take steps if it becomes a problem.
