And how long did you go without getting any updates??

November 14 2009, 5:21 PM

If you say more than a year then you've allot of catching up to do and I'm suprised you ain't gotten a bug.

You also could allready have a bug and the "better" ones will not let any security updates load for same reason.

I've a suggustion. Bring up your Windows Task Manager window ( press Ctrl, Alt and Delete at the same time) and look under "Performance". There will be a graph there. When you open a program the computer will use as much processor as needed at the program then level out to just what it needs to run that. Example, I'm running it as I type this.....it used 40-50% of the power to open said program (Internet Exploder) but now is using between 4-20% depending on how often I hit the preview button here or look at another site using a different window. I expect that.

If you run any higher constantly and don't have anything your running then the computer is running something on its own...and there's a damn good chance its a virus....

The term "zombie" comes to mind . . .

November 14 2009, 5:22 PM

Some fiendish spammer/phisher is accessing your PC without your knowledge as part of their network of evil! It 'wakes up' when you're not around, typically in the middle of the night, and executes programs you would not want to be associated with!

You just thought you were in control of what it's doing at all times. It's trying to inflict viruses and send out spam to everyone on your address list, how does that make you feel?!

You sure it's a NEW update, or

November 14 2009, 6:43 PM

is it the same one, failing to install?

A good friend will be there to bail you out of jail in the morning. A great friend will be sitting next to you, asking "how did we get caught?"

When the computer asks you to do the update

November 14 2009, 8:01 PM

Instead of doing "express" click "custom" and read what the update is, if its the same repeated one then you need to figure out what it is and if its important.

Security updates are vital and if its not taking one you have a problem. There was a update for networking computers awhile back that I had a simalar problem with. After some checking I found I didn't need it and set the computer in question (I own 3) to ignore that update.

2nd week of the month is "normal" for any Microcrap update

November 14 2009, 8:05 PM

Without knowing how computer savvy Bo is all we can do if find out what update his machine keeps wanting to do, and figure out if its needed or not.

Could be anything from a networking update to his computer wanting to download IE8, and if he's using a different browser like Firefox then that could be the problem

I got sick of the constant updates

November 16 2009, 12:52 AM

Now, I set my update scheduler for once a week, typically late friday night. I hit the wall on this when I was about to start a PowerPoint presentation to a client and the computer shut down to install updates. Never again!
