Was just on TV here in NYC. I can't believe he got the Medal of Honor for a PT boat ride.
Also in the movie, MacArthur had late model Shermans for his first offensive and Corsairs.....I didn't know that, amazing.

"winning" combat medals
June 27 2012, 4:25 AM
MacArthur did not "win" the Medal of Honor, he was awarded it, as no combat medal is ever won. Then the person who gets a combat medal, from the MoH on down to the Purple Heart, is
the recipient, not the winner of said medal. They sure as hell were not in competition for them, were they? And for the record, the word congressional is not a part of the official name for the Medal of Honor
either but keeps getting referred to with that word in front. check it out. Just saying.................
"For conspicuous leadership in preparing the Philippine Islands to resist conquest, for gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action against invading Japanese forces, and for the heroic conduct of defensive and offensive operations on the Bataan Peninsula. He mobilized, trained, and led an army which has received world acclaim for its gallant defense against a tremendous superiority of enemy forces in men and arms. His utter disregard of personal danger under heavy fire and aerial bombardment, his calm judgment in each crisis, inspired his troops, galvanized the spirit of resistance of the Filipino people, and confirmed the faith of the American people in their Armed Forces."
I cannot recollect the source, but I have read somewhere that this was how President Roosevelt was able to sweeten the deal and get MacArthur to evacuate, after previously refusing to leave.
MacArthur believed that he deserved the MOH for an action during WWI, but that Gen. Pershing's staff had it in for him. I think the source was American Caesar by William Manchester, but I can't swear to it.

He Like to send his troops in just to prove his point.
His CMH in the PI he himself did nothing never picked up a weapon never saved another GI or preformed a heroic act like taking out a machine gun nest or other simlar deeds.Having been a GI he seem to be a show boater like John Kerry from MA.His men never like him he was a politician .My two cents
Early in WWII the MOH was handed out a bit freely in some cases. The point can be made that Admiral Kidd and Capt. Van Valkenberg on the Arizona were questionable awards. The point can be made that MacArthur was an legitimate American hero and proved it numerous times. Is it odd that Chesty Puller got 5 Navy Crosses, but never the MOH? Fair?
you can't be seriously grinding this axe because.....

MacArthur "failed" to win the battle or because he didn't "disobey direct orders" can you? These type of "vain-glorious" generals (Patton comes to mind) inspire men to fight wars and like it or not, are exactly what needs to be in place in times such as those. It's "folly" to gripe about today's perspectives overlain onto the desperate 1940s. LL
So a friend says: "cheer up things could be worse; so I cheered up and sure as hell Things Got Worse!
"American Caesar" is a good start. "MacArthur's Escape" (subtitle: John "Wild Man" Bulkeley and the Rescue of an American Hero) by George Smith is also very good. I'm trusting that you have some extensive combat experience to base your assumption on.

And 4 years in Manchuria. My neighbor's father was born in the Phillipines in 1925, and he had a ringside seat for the whole show. Many of his friends saw Mac in a very different light as well, but they had faith in the American people.
I read American Ceasar a long time ago. Not to belabor a point, but, it was WELL WRITTEN....which was what I was getting at all along.....
"The FANS are fighting back!!!"
"The SECURITY GUARDS are fighting back!!!"
