So I just got my vacation bid award for next year and I have 5 weeks of vacation from starting roughly April 29th and going into May. The wife and I were thinking of visiting New Zealand during this time. We were wondering if the Autumn is a good time to visit, and more importantly if it's crowded during this period (i.e. Kiwi holiday's, influx of tourists ect, ect.)

Holiday in NZ

Hi, the period you are thinking of is quite good as the kiddy-winks should be in school. The best time I would go for is Feb-March as its generally better weather in that its warm, sunny and a bit more stable. TVAL at Hood aerodrome near Masterton and the Omaka Avaition centre just out of Blenheim well worth a visit. RNZAF museum at Wigram another.
April is good, if you're constrained to those date.

The leaves are turning, too. so the hills and valleys are gorgeous.
Also, don't forget the small Ashburton aircraft museum, south of Christchurch. In fact, you should fly into ChCh and stick to the south Island. Five weeks might be enough!
The Army Museum at Waiouru and other attractions...

would include the MOTAT (Museum of Transport & Technology) & Associated "airfield" in Auckland City, along with the Auckland War memorial Museum, and of course Ardmore Aerodrome (you can book a Dakota tour of Auckland on most weekends!)
If you were to come same a week earlier you wiould be in NZ for ANZAC day (25th April) and could attend a Dawn Parade and get some idea of just how much we remember, now 98 (in 2013) years ago. The attendance for many Parades number in Thousands, nationwide.
I second All the other suggestions as well, the weather will/should be better (and warmer!), earlier in the year (Feb thru April)
