no wait! i think jordan schembri has droped down to 126 for states he wrestled 134 all year he gave trevor baistian the number 1 ranked central kid his only loss he might have stayed at 134 but if he droped he's the best for sure. he's 64-3 with districs.

I'm interested in what the #2 out of BG, Jordan Cowell (Archbold), can do down at Athens. Very strong wrestler with good technique, but tends to be asleep at the begining of matches and gets down early.

Matt Van Curen should win 126. I saw him wrestle a few times this year and he is very tough. I saw him wrestle Skonieczny and was down 3-0 before he hit him with a throw and pinned him. We wrestle in Northeast Ohio so we don't know hardly any of the other wrestlers. I have seen Jacob Davis wrestle and he should be on the podium as well. What about James Burge, Logan Tucker, Nathan Bowers or Andrew Globke?

First of all, trying to pick the likely winners can be difficult when you have wrestlers from all over the state and many have never seen one another. With 48 man brackets this year it will make it even more difficult. At the High School State championships there are usually a few upsets even with 16 man brackets so I am sure there will be a favorite or two who may slip if they make a mistake. I tried to rank them 1 through 10 but any of the top 7 or 8 kids could be battling for 1st or 2nd at the end.

126 lb. Jr. High State Championship
1. Nick Skonieczny
2. Matt Van Curen
3. Jacob Davis
4. Richard Escobedo
5. Andrew Globke
6. Logan Tucker
7. Caleb Ludwick
8. Nathan Bowers
9. Jordan Cowell
10. Timothy Thomas
11. James Burge

The Brecksville district was one of the more difficult with the best win-loss record and a previous state qualifier and two grade school state placers. I will say, however, none of the districts for 126 were full of previous state qualifiers and placers like some of the other weight classes (see Norwalk 120 class). I have the top two coming out of the Brecksville district where Van Curen placed 1st and Sconieczny 2nd. For state I have Sconieczny 1st and heard he was winning the district match until Van Curen pinned him at 3:29. Skonieczny won three matches at state (114) as a 7th grader which is the most out of any of the 126 class qualifiers from last year. Luckily Sconieczny and Van Curen are on opposite halves of the bracket so they won't meet until the finals IF they both make it to the championship match.

Davis won the Norwalk district with a tech fall in the championship match and won 2 matches at state last year (102) as a 7th grader. Escobedo won the Bowling Green district and is listed at 45-1 with his only loss of the year coming at 134 to the undefeated Mallernee from Oak Harbor. Globke, a SQ last year at 114 is listed with a 35-0 record and won the Archbishop Moeller district but squeaked by with a couple 1-point decisions in the quarter finals and the finals. Tucker is the 2nd wrestler at state who is listed with an undefeated record at 24-0. Tucker dominated while winning the East Liverpool district but I have a feeling it was not one of the more difficult districts with only 12 entries at this weight class.

Ludwig lost a 4-5 decision to Globke to finish 2nd at the Moeller district. Bowers, a SQ last year at 102 won the Worthington district and is listed at 26-1. Cowell lost an 8-10 decision to Escobedo to finish 2nd at the Bowling Green district. Thomas won the Athens district and is listed at 23-3. Burge won the Butler district with the fewest entries of all districts with 11. Burge is listed at 27-1 but will have to deal with Skonieczny in his 2nd match.

I was at the East Liverpool district and watched Tucker’s finals match. He won by fall but he didn’t dominate the match. He was losing 3-0, should have been more. He was taken down in the second period but they were ruled out of bounds, which was very questionable. When they started in the neutral position he quickly got a double leg take down and pin. Other than that he didn’t do anything in that match.

I would have to say Skonieczny or that Van Curren are the top two, but I heard (don’t know if it’s true) that Van Curren is a year older. Does anyone know anything about this?

Yes, real hard to pick a winner out of 48 kids. Team this or Team that is all great, but it does not mean placement. With more youth state wide tournaments, the knowledge base for who is who for JH kids and there abilities is growing. But there is always that lone kid practicing by himself on the used piece of mat his dad bought somewhere southeast of Columbus, that nobody knows about, that can win. These kids body's are changing by the minute, and their dad's expectations of winning are growing just as fast. Not many can handle it.

TigerTank, I watched Cowell vs. Anderson at the BG District and the match was just like you described. Anderson was man-handling Cowell at first and I can't remember the exact score but I think Cowell was down like 2-6 mid 2nd period & ended up winning 12-7! It looked like Skyler's wrestling was more based on strength than technique.

I didn't get to see the championship match where Cowell lost 8-10 (watching another match) but it must have been a good match with a close score like that.

I think you might just want to start a Jordan Schembri thread.
