No. Just meandering along the St Croix River bank.

There are some relatively young white pines clinging to the limestone bluffs. The area used to be a rich forest of very old giant white pines. They began logging them out in 1839 and eventually reamed the area of them.

They floated the trees down this river to a mill. Sometimes they'd cause an enormous log jam.  My grandfather worked for a while on the crew that broke up log jams by hand and foot. They were called log rollers, and it was not a job known for safety.

They went over land this way. Poor horses.

Oh yea, this is an affair forum.

Yea. um. Well. My uncle told me this story. One time a bunch of loggers were out partying and drinking on a big rig on the St Croix. Many were married fellers. Somebody had hired some 'girls' from St Paul--you know the type. They were out there hooping it up as the evening fell. Anyway, the wives caught wind of this. Whoo boy. They loaded up in row boats armed with brooms and sticks and headed out to war.

Ah, the good ole days.
