Band: Wur'ship Project

The Mic: What got this band together and started in this business?

Marriage is really the best explanation since we are a husband and wife duo. Other than that I (Jeremy) have always had this passion for music deep down inside. When I write a song or sing a song, especially one that I've connected with, it's like an emotional dump.

As far as the guys on the back line. We've found that they come and go. That's why we've aligned ourselves to be a husband\wife duo.

The Mic:Who writes and produces all the material for the band?

For the most part I (Jeremy) write or co-write all our material. However, Kaci has been digging into the process some here lately. For the performance production piece we just try to come up with something that we'd like to listen to ourselves. For the recording aspect of production we like to use Moses Kostamo of Moko Music or the guys from Zodlounge in Nashville.

The Mic:The band played in front of or with any acts our readers would know from the Mainstream?

We've been on the bill with Jeremy Camp, Mercy Me, Third Day, and a bunch of others but the downside is, being independent, we were on some stage set out by the Johny on the Spots. It's quite humorous really. "Come and check out emerging talent...next to the toilets!" Guess you have to start somewhere eh?

The Mic:Where can people access your music on the web?

There are several places. To just listen to some streaming audio head to these sites:
http://www.wurship.com
http://www.myspace.com/wurshipproject
http://www.purevolume.com/wurshipproject
http://www.shoutlife.com/wurshipproject

To purchase our music online, check out these places:
iTunes music store
Rhapsody
CDbaby.com

The Mic:Any embarrassing moments on stage?

Outside of a getting tongue tied a few times, nothing significant. We've been pretty fortunate there. Now since I've said that, I'm probably going to rip a loud one or something when the auditorium is unusually quiet. That's the way it always happens isn't it?

The Mic:Any good stories you want to tell us?

There are numerous stories. There are heartwarming stories of how our songs have helped people through times of depression and there are the stories of those that are struggling with cutting, addictions, and other struggles. They are all amazing stories.

The Mic:Who is the bands musical influence?

We've been influenced by everything we've ever heard honestly. Whether we thought it was amazing or it sucked dogs butt...it influenced us. Either to try to imitate or to stay the heck away!

The Mic:How did the band get together?

Kaci and I met at college. As for our back line (drums, bass, and guitar) they are kind of fluid and we've been through several different people in the past couple of years.

The Mic:What is your musical background like?

Kaci sang in choir some back in High School. I didn't even learn to play guitar or read music until I was 21. For us it was always a deep desire but there were never opportunities to fill those passions.

The Mic:Any other members in your family that are musicians?

Some dink around and play in Church, but no one that's serious.

The Mic:What is the TOP reason why you want to play music?

To connect with people and help them through the darkness. Music is a release for us whether that be writing, playing, or listening. We just want to be a help to someone in a positive way.

The Mic:what's your stance on file swapping?

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one. Personally I deleted some music that I downloaded without paying for it. Mostly because that was my conviction and I want to act in integrity. Everyone likes free stuff and I'm no different.

On the same token, for the artist, there are few that make big bucks off their music. If it's good stuff and you like the artist and you want to hear more from them in the future...my suggestion is to pay them. Margins are tight when you are talking about an independent musician footing $20,000.00 - 75,000.00 of their own money for a high quality, radio friendly, well produced album.

The Mic:what is the process of making a cd?

This is an organic process that changes with different Engineers\Producers involved. Here's a rough look at how we'll do our next studio release:

There's the obvious writing of the tune. Then there is what is called pre-production where we will sit down and hash out how we'd like the song to flow. For instance, do we want to run it Verse 1, Chorus, Verse 2, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus, Chorus...or do we want to try a different creative combo of some sort. Once this is nailed down we'll make a rough recording and send it off to the producer. From there the producer will come up with the song intro and help develop the melody and the flow.

When the producer is ready, they will either have some bed tracks ready prior to us hitting the studio or we'll walk in and lay them down with some studio musicians. After that, the studio musicians will begin overdubs and laying down their final tracks beginning with the drums, then the bass, then all the rest, and finally the vocals.

Then everyone walks away from the project for a while and after a couple days\weeks we'll review it and see what we need to batten down. From here the producer will begin the final mixing. Once the final mix is done, it's off to a Mastering Engineer. Once that guys done it's off to manufacture. Of course during the course of all this the artwork is being done which might consist of a photo shoot or two.

It's pretty time consuming and it costs a butt load of money!

The Mic:how do you get the word out about your music?

The best thing is to get some high profile shows and totally rock. If that happens we usually see dozens of people come on board that will join our email list and tell everyone they know (as well as a lot of people they don't know) about our music.

Other than that, it's Internet sites like MySpace, interviews like this one, anything that we can find. Of course there is the idea method, get signed by a major label and have them dump $30,000.00 into radio, magazines, and other forms of publications. But, unfortunately, that's not reality for us.

The Mic:how is your local responce to your music?

We're in Central Kansas, so response to anything is pretty much nada. This place is really kind of weird. To answer your question, once people see us and hear us live they usually respond very favorably. The interesting thing is, because of people's preconceived notions of Christian's (which I don't blame anyone for!) they hear our name and they begin to scatter like the plague is in town. However, once we begin to rock it they almost always come back and jam with us.

The Mic:what is the farthers you have traveled for a gig?

Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. That was one long haul! We actually had other tour stops on the way up, but didn't break up our trip on the way back. 22 hours straight through to get home. Yeah, way nuts!

The Mic:What tune on the cd are you most proud of?

It's hard to choose between "Falling Down" and "I'm Alive". Both songs have been received so well and we've had so much feedback about the impact those songs have had on individual lives.

Now let's break away from the tradtional band questions you get asked all the time...Let's have some fun...

1. Why do HOT chicks date ugly dudes?

Dude, I ask myself that question everyday! I'm a practical man and I look in the mirror and think to myself, "what in the world does Kaci see in me?"

2. Why are all guys in porn movies Douche bags?

Got me.

3. When Rappers do interviews on TV, why do they always have a wall of Kung Fu movies behind them?

Part of us being successful and hard working has to do with us cutting things out of our lives that waste time...cable TV got cut about 8 years ago. So again, got me man.

4. If a billionaire would come to your band and say you could play with any band..living, dead, broke up,etc.

*Who do you play with 3 bands one has to be your band...

Led Zepplin
Stone Temple Pilots
Wur'ship Project...that's a heck of a lineup!

and

*Who opens and who closes?

Wur'ship Project definitely opens...that way we can get the heck off the stage to let STP fire up the crowd and then let Zepplin melt their faces off!

Thanks for being with us today and you can catch these guys on http://www.wurship.com or http://myspace. com/wurshipproject
