Matt K

Band: Matt K feat. Dem Deep Creek Boys!
The Mic: What got this band together and started in
this business?
Although the use of the word "business" makes me cringe a little, what basically got this whole adventure started was when I booked an acoustic show in Salina for a couple of touring friends where I played a short set of covers. After the show, they boosted my ego a little bit and offered to help me out with a couple of tours, so I started just playing acoustic and writing my own songs. Later, I decided to ask some friends to help me out and play drums/bass, and they did. Even later than that, we started playing electric, but I still write all the songs on an acoustic guitar, and most of our shows are acoustic.
The lineup is ever-changing, but once you've played in this band, you're a part of it forever as far as I'm concerned. There's no official line up and I write all the songs, but all my friends have helped me tremendously in making this what it is, and that's kinda what we are about: Being friends and making music with everything we've got.
The Mic:Who writes and produces all the material for
the band?
I guess I sort of answered this one already haha
The Mic:The band played in front of or with any acts
our readers would
know from the Mainstream?
I wouldn't call them mainstream, but if there is anyone reading this who's into the folk punk thing, we've played with Ghost Mice, Toby Foster and toured with Jon Crocker. However, Scott Stapp is very high on my list of bands to play with in the near future.
The Mic:Where can people access your music on the web?
The best place to access our music is, of course, our myspace. www. myspace. com/mattkfeatdemdeepcreekboys
I know it's a long URL, sorry. Also, in the next couple of weeks, you can purchase our new album on www. bonfireclubrecords. com
I'm not exactly sure how much they will cost, but it will definitely be $5 or cheaper.
The Mic:Any embarrassing moments on stage?
Hmmmm... None that I can recall, really. Other than being out of tune a lot and breaking a lot of strings, nothing has managed to embarass us yet.
The Mic:Any good stories you want to tell us?
IT WAS RAINING! AND THE ROAD WAS WET! AND HE WAS JUST LIKE, "DUDE! JUST LET GO, DUDE!"
The Mic:Who is the bands musical influence?
I'm not going to try to speak for the others for fear of leaving someone out. Personally, some influences that I can think of off the top of my head have been The Alcoholic Freshman, Matt Turner, Jon Crocker, Bomb the Music Industry!, Andrew Jackson Jihad, Imadethismistake, Ghost Mice, Billy Bragg, The Lawrence Arms/Sundowner, Against Me!, and O Pioneers!!!
There are a lot of exclamation points in there. I'm sure I left some bands out, but that's a fairly solid list.
Also, anyone reading this should definitely check out a band called Thor. They've been around for a while, but they definitely know what it means to ROCK!
The Mic:How did the band get together?
This one sounds kind of familiar...
The Mic:What is your musical background like?
I got a $100 Yamaha acoustic from my mother for my 8th birthday, and have yet to improve since then. However, I have been in a lot of bands from the Abilene area including Look Out Below and Jabberwocky Juggernaut.
The Mic:Any other members in your family that are
musicians?
No, actually.
The Mic:What is the TOP reason why you want to play
music?
Definitely the bitches. Anyone who knows me will agree with that.
what's your stance on file swapping?
Go for it. People are starting to figure out that music, as an industry, is going to **** and are starting to discover music they've never heard through the internet and file swapping and all that. It's becoming easier and easier for bands to make and distribute their own music, which is an amazing thing. A lot of people argue that it's the same as stealing, but to me, music is art and art is free. At the same time, I'm not going to say that you shouldn't have to pay for music. There's nothing wrong with paying $5 for a CD from a touring band who comes to play near you. There are even labels now who are giving their music away for free on the net and asking only for donations (ie, Quote Unquote Records, Caffeine Tambourine Productions, etc.)
Not a bad plug, huh?
what is the process of making a cd?
Well, hopefully you have at least a few songs before considering making a CD, so you record those songs somehow. Some bands will pay for studio time, I prefer to record everything in my bedroom with a 4 input mixer and free software. After you record your songs, you should mix them and make sure they sound OK. you can decide what order you want your songs to play on the CD. Then you can get your CD "mastered" by a company who will take money to do that, if you're into the whole "sound quality" thing. Then you either burn CD-R's or you design covers and disc labels and get ahold of a company that will press your CD's. After that, you pay said company and they press your CD's and send them to you. Or, you can sign to (Insert random major record label here) and let them do all that for you.
how do you get the word out about your music?
Word of mouth, word of internet, and word of touring!
how is your local responce to your music?
Positive? There is always ****-talk, but I have yet to hear any. Pretty much anyone who comes to the local shows, I know and am friends with, so it's all good in da hood.
what is the farthers you have traveled for a gig?
On our second tour, my good friend, Dustin Neff, and I had to travel from Belleville, IL (about 20 or so miles north of St. Louis) to St. Petersburg, FL in one night. The drive was a solid 14 hours, and I had the first shift from about 11:00 PM Central time 'till about 7:00 AM Eastern. Since Neff was sleeping the whole time I had no music or anything, so that was pretty hardcore. Needless to say, I did a horrible job booking that tour, and I was very dumb.
What tune on the cd are you most proud of?
Hmmm... The one that everyone likes!
Now let's break away from the tradtional band questions you get asked all the time...Let's have some fun...
1. Why do HOT chicks date ugly dudes?
This is a question that has to be looked at from a psychological standpoint. My personal opinion would be that most women have a very different standard of beauty than most dudes, but not really any less shallow. They are more attracted to how a dude dresses, how much money he makes, and who his friends/family are. That is really the best I can do with that question.
2. Why are all guys in porn movies Douche bags?
I don't really have a very good perspective on this, as I have yet to meet a guy in a porn movie (as far as I know), but I would say that the reason is probably that they have a bigger dick than you and everyone knows it.
3. When Rappers do interviews on TV, why do they always have a wall of Kung Fu movies behind them?
Have you seen the movie version of Kung Fu?! The one where he works on the railroad in the Old West? It's bitchin!
4. If a billionaire would come to your band and say you could play with any band..living, dead, broke up,etc.
*Who do you play with 3 bands one has to be your band...
and
*Who opens and who closes?
Billionaires can't bring back the dead. Things don't work like that.
Thanks for being with us today and you can catch these guys on www. myspace. com/mattkfeatdemdeepcreekboys
