WHAT IS EOKA-B?
While the inter-communal talks were continuing in 1968, two main ideas surfaced within the Greek Cypriot Community. One of these talks envisaged that a swift military operation be launched to suppress the Turkish Cypriot resistance and ENOSIS to be proclaimed; the other envisaged the suppression of t Turkish Cypriots' through economic and political pressure within the framework of a long-term program so that Enosıs might be followed through.
The former one was supported by senior pro-EOKA people, pro-junta people while the latter one was supported by Makarios, well aware of the fact that a military operation would be destined to failure due to the Turkish interruption.
Makarios, on the one hand, intensified the pressures on Turkish Cypriots and facilitated the departure of Turkish Cypriots from the island; on the other hand, he extended the period of the inter-communal talks and rejected giving an autonomous status to Turkish residents of the island.
Those choosing the military action for ENOSIS enlivened EOKA and founded a secret junta-assisted organization named "EOKA-B" under Greece's control. The military officers of Greece in the island controlled the organization; these officers were also controlling the Greek Cypriot National Guard Army (RMMO).
The first effective action of EOKA-B was firing a helicopter that Makarios was in March 1970. The helicopter had to land. Makarios was safe. Right after this attack, 10 senior members of the old EOKA were arrested. Yorgacis, the interior minister of the time, was killed suspiciously.
Upon these developments, Grivas returned to the island on 28 August 1971 and took control of EOKA-B. EOKA-B militants controlled by Grivas started stealing arms from the RMMO camps and organized arsons. . 3 priests who were members of Sen-Sinod Assembly of the Church refused to stand by Makarios. Makarios sent a letter to Grivas, who made ENOSIS statements, and called on him to cooperate on 21 February 1971. Grivas rejected Makarios' proposal.
Makarios made another statement on 29 October 1971 and sad that if "If all the Greek governments reach an agreement, he would declare ENOSIS right away without reservation. But, if the stakes for successs or failure were to be considered, it would be impossible to do that."
EOKA-B wanted to overthrow Makarios and, to this end, it intensified its acts of sabotage.
Upon an increase in violence, Makarios made a statement on 31 January 1973 and referred to EOKA-B as the "grave-diggers of ENOSIS."
