KARS - President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Monday that under international agreements, Cyprus could not be member of an institution which Turkey was not a member of.
Denktas, who visited Kars Mayor Naif Alibeyoglu, gave information about historical course of Cyprus question, and recalled the agreement signed in 1960.
Stating that Cyprus could not be a member of an institution which Turkey is not a member of, Denktas said, ''but what does the British say: 'bases are left to me in 1960 agreement.' Protection of bases are among the responsibilities of Britain, Greece and Turkey. Preservation of the partnership is again under the authority of same guarantor states. Britain says it does not read the agreement like we read it.''
Denktas said British were advance guards of Greek Cypriots, stating that target of those, who want to make whole Cyprus enter the EU, was to get rid of Turkish soldiers.
Denktas said Greek Cypriot side considered themselves as the legal government of whole Cyprus, and noted that, ''they tell us to solve this question soon. We are not the intransigent side. The intransigent side is the Greek Cypriots who say they are the legal government of Cyprus.''
Denktas said Britain, United States and other countries told the Greek Cypriots that it was the legal government of Cyprus, stating that, ''we are a state and government like you. You should accept this fact if you want an agreement.''
ANNAN'S PLAN IS A PLAN THAT WAS PREPARED IN COOPERATION WITH BRITAIN AND UNITED STATES
Stating that Annan's plan aimed to uproot Turkey from Cyprus, he said that it also aimed to remove rights which Turkey gained on Cyprus in 1960s, get rid of Turkish soldiers from the island and dissolve Turkish Cypriots in the European Union (EU).
Reacting to those who supported Annan's plan, Denktas said, ''who invites you to this path? Greek people and Greek Cypriot people invite you. Are they inviting you just because they like you, or to achieve what they could not achieve with weapons and terrorism through the EU? Turkish Cypriot people cannot live without Turkey. The most important evidence of it is 1974 operation. If this operation had not taken place, even a single Turkish Cypriot would not have been in Cyprus today. Turkey is doing its utmost not to lose this cause.''
