DAVOS - Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said, ''we will always be one step ahead of Greek Cypriot side about the Cyprus issue.''
In an interview with the CNN-Turk television channel, Prime Minister Erdogan said on Saturday, ''we want the two sides in the island to come together and reach a compromise. If a compromise is not reached, and if the Greek Cypriot side announces some formulations, we can welcome them. I believe that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will also welcome them.''
When asked, ''do you mean that if the Greek Cypriot side accepts the plan of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, the TRNC will also accept it?'' Prime Minister Erdogan said, ''we will not stay behind of the Greek Cypriot side.''
Upon another question, Prime Minister Erdogan said that if the sides reached an agreement, a referendum could be held before May 1, 2004.
''We will always be one step ahead of Greek Cypriot side about the Cyprus issue. We told them that we were ready to assist them with good will. However, we will not accept any proposal that will lead to insolubility. President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and I will meet with President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on Sunday. He sincerely wants to find a solution to the Cyprus issue. TRNC has been exposed to embargoes for forty years. It is totally unfair. It is also a violation of human rights,'' he added.
