Mihalis Papapetrou, the leader of the United Democrats Movement in Cyprus, said they kept Turkish Cypriots in the ghettos between 1963 and 1974.
Papapetrou, in the statement made to the newspaper Alithia, said: "We felt good and relaxed because the Cyprus Republic had become totally Greek and the disturbing Turkish Cypriots were not under our feet. However, this situation lead the other half of Cyprus to become ’occupied’ on that black morning. Let us not repeat the same mistake."
The de facto division is inevitable, according to Papaterou, as long as the same policy continues. "We isolated the Turks in the ghettos between 1963-1974 eithout taking into consideration human rights or anything else." He had previously confessed to the Greek Cypriot press that EOKA murdered Turkish Cypriots.
On the other hand, with the US deputy undersecretary of State, Mathew Bryza's visit to the region, the US is planning to bring together Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot Government leader Tasos Papadopulous unofficially. In the news that appeared in Greek Cypriot press, this American attitude is defined as "intervention in the Cyprus issue."
