OIC UNANIMOUSLY VOTES TO CHANGE THE TITLE OF ‘THE MUSILIM TURKISH CYPRIOT COMMUNITY TO ‘CYPRUS TURKISH STATE’
The Organization of Islamic Conference has approved unanimously a resolution envisaging a change in the title under which the Turkish Cypriot people is represented within the OIC.
Member states of the Organization at the fourth session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union yesterday voted in favor of changing the title of ‘the Cyprus Muslim Turkish Community’ to the ‘Turkish Cypriot State’.
The fourth session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Conference Member States ended yesterday in Istanbul.
The Speaker of the Republic’s Assembly Fatma Ekenoglu made a speech at the closing session of the Conference under the title of ‘the Speaker of the Cyprus Moslem Turkish Community’.
Pointing out that the Cyprus problem remained unresolved for many years, Ms Ekenoglu reminded that the Turkish Cypriot people had proven during the 2004 referendum its willingness towards a peaceful settlement to the Cyprus Problem.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament Bulent Arinc said that the Turkish Cypriot people, from now on, will be represented within the Organization of Islamic Conference under the title of ‘the Turkish Cypriot State’.
Point out that the ‘Istanbul Declaration’ was also approved at the Conference, Mr Arinc said that, as regards the Cyprus issue, the declaration envisages the removal of the Turkish Cypriot people’s international isolation and calls on the United Nations to continue its efforts towards helping find a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem.
The next Conference of the Organization of Islamic Conference’s Parliamentary Union will be held in 2008 in Egypt.
