GREEK CYPRIOT JOURNALISTS SET FREE AFTER PAYING FINE

Two Greek Cypriot journalists from a South Cyprus television station who were arrested yesterday while trying to film a first degree military zone near Palm Beach in Gazimagusa were brought before a military court today.

The two men in custody who were sentenced by the court to pay a 400 YTL fine or face a 1 month prison term were set free after paying their fines.

Antenna 1 Cameraman Tasos Demetriades and reporter Sotiris Papadopoulos who had crossed into the TRNC yesterday through the Metehan checkpoint to cover the trial of another Greek Cypriot in custody were arrested while trying to film the closed city of Maras near the Palm Beach hotel.

Following today’s hearing, the court, in light of their good behaviour and after receiving a promise not to repeat such an offence, sentenced the two men each to pay a 400 New Turkish Liras fine or serve a 1 month prison sentence.

The two men in custody were set free after paying the fines.
